Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation Recognized for Achievements in Tourism Promotion
Awarded the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism
Transitioning from Day Visits to Extended Stays... Recognizing the Success of Haenam's Stay Tourism
The Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation has been awarded the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award for its achievements in enhancing stay-type tourism and expanding community participation in tourism content.
On September 30, the foundation announced that it received the award during the 53rd Tourism Day Ceremony held at the Lotte Hotel Crystal Ballroom in Seoul.
This award acknowledges the foundation's efforts to expand stay-type tourism, particularly focusing on transforming tourists' "one-day visits" into "extended stays" where they experience local culture and daily life in Haenam. The foundation emphasized that as tourists spend more time in the area, it leads to increased local consumption in various sectors such as accommodations, restaurants, experiential facilities, and local shops, enhancing opportunities for interaction between residents and visitors.
As a result, participation in tourism activities has grown significantly. The number of participants in the foundation's tourism programs surged from 7,217 in 2022 to 38,217 by 2025, marking a 5.3-fold increase. This growth reflects the development of a participatory tourism ecosystem involving local residents, tourism operators, and visitors.
A notable initiative is the resident-participatory stay tourism model called "Ddakkkut Masil." The foundation has enhanced this program by connecting local accommodations and experiential content, allowing tourists to directly engage with Haenam's daily life and culture. By 2025, the foundation aims to expand the number of resident-participatory accommodation and experience packages to 31, attracting 7,585 visitors and establishing itself as a representative model of Haenam-style stay tourism.
Another significant example is the "Camper City Tour," which combines camping with city tours, capitalizing on recent travel trends. In 2025, this initiative is expected to serve 1,000 teams and 3,748 individuals, integrating new travel methods with existing tourism resources to enhance Haenam's appeal.
Collaboration beyond regional boundaries has also yielded results. The foundation has established a tourism governance model through the "Ganghaeyoung Project," a super-regional cooperation initiative involving Haenam, Gangjin, and Yeongam to jointly address population decline and rural extinction. This project has successfully attracted over 2,500 residents through special interest tourism.
The foundation's management capabilities in the tourism sector have been objectively recognized as well. It was selected as an excellent DMO (Destination Management Organization) by the Korea Tourism Organization, acknowledging both the efficiency and public service aspects of its tourism operations.
This award signifies that the changes in Haenam tourism extend beyond merely increasing visitor numbers to structural innovations in local tourism, encompassing diverse tourism policies, community involvement, stay-type content, and super-regional cooperation.
A representative from the Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation expressed gratitude for receiving such a meaningful award, stating, "We are honored to receive the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award. We will strive to transform Haenam into a place where tourists want to stay and return, rather than just a brief stopover."
They further emphasized the commitment to building a sustainable regional tourism ecosystem where residents and tourists can grow together through ongoing inter-regional collaboration.
