The Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation, through the community-centered cultural arts education program 'Gagahoho',
Collaborates with multicultural families to create 'Storybooks of Mother's Country'
From traditional tales of the mother’s homeland to children’s travel stories... Capturing family stories in picture books
The Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation has been selected to implement the '2026 Community-Centered Cultural Arts Education Support Project Gagahoho' initiated by the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service. As part of this project, a program called 'Storybook of Mother's Country' was conducted for multicultural families.
This program was designed to help children from multicultural families learn about the traditional tales and folklore passed down from their mother's homeland, allowing them to naturally engage with the culture and stories of their mother's country.
In particular, the program was promoted in collaboration with the Haenam Family Center, which facilitated participant recruitment and ensured that interested multicultural families could join the program.
During the program, families explored traditional tales and folklore from their mother's country together. Children expressed their thoughts and feelings about the stories through drawings. Additionally, those who had visited their mother's homeland depicted the landscapes, memories, emotions, and impressions they experienced during their travels in their artwork.
Children not only listened to stories from their mother's country but also expressed their own experiences and feelings through art and storytelling, connecting their mother's culture with their personal experiences to create a unified narrative.
The completed drawings and stories were compiled into a single 'Storybook of Mother's Country', preserving the family's cultural background and memories. This initiative provided children with an opportunity to understand their mother's country and learn about their family's stories, while also fostering a space for parents and children to share their experiences and thoughts.
A representative from the Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation stated, "We structured the program to allow children to hear stories from their mother's country and express their experiences and thoughts through art, culminating in a unique family storybook. We will continue to operate community-centered cultural arts education that enables diverse local families to understand and communicate with each other's cultures."
