In mid-May, Yunggunneung in Hwaseong is completely immersed in the sounds of nature, free from the noise of the city. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is home to the royal tombs of Crown Prince Sado and Queen Heongyeong, as well as King Jeongjo and Queen Hyoi. This space embodies the filial piety and history of the Joseon royal family.

May is particularly beautiful, with pine needles at their greenest, allowing visitors to enjoy a healing experience in vast forests for a modest admission fee of 1,000 won. Located in Gyeonggi-do, Hwaseong is a popular destination for day trips from Seoul, with flat walking paths that are accessible to people of all ages.

The most striking feature of Yunggunneung is the expansive pine forest path that leads from the entrance to the royal tombs. The towering pines, some hundreds of years old, form a natural canopy that shields visitors from the strong May sunlight. The subtle scent of pine along the path is enough to melt away daily stress.

The walking trails are made of flat dirt paths, making it an ideal spot for families with strollers or wheelchairs. In mid-May, wildflowers bloom along the trails, adding simple beauty to the surroundings, and benches placed along the way offer perfect spots to quietly enjoy the forest bathing experience.

At the end of the trail, visitors encounter Yungneung, one of the most beautiful royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. Reflecting King Jeongjo's deep filial love for his father, Crown Prince Sado, the arrangement of stone artifacts here is more elaborate and ornate compared to other royal tombs. The stone path leading to the pavilion and the surrounding green grass create a picturesque scene reminiscent of an ink painting.

Thanks to the meticulous management by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the preservation of the site is excellent, providing a valuable educational opportunity for children to learn about the history and values of filial piety during the Joseon era. The sight of the red Hongsalmun gate and the royal tomb under the clear May sky is also a favorite photo spot for photographers.

The Jaesil, located on the way to the royal tombs, served as a space for preparing rituals and retains the elegant charm of traditional Hanok architecture. In mid-May, the ancient trees in the courtyard create a serene atmosphere with their lush greenery. Sitting on the wooden floor to rest and feel the essence of Joseon scholars offers a unique experience.

Beside the Jaesil is the spacious Yeonji pond, where visitors can admire a tranquil water garden. The walking path around the pond offers a different charm from the main forest trail, making it an excellent place to spend quiet moments against the backdrop of the green May forest reflected in the water.

Yunggunneung features a large free parking area, making it very convenient for visitors by car. With an affordable admission fee of 1,000 won for adults, Hwaseong residents even receive a 50% discount, making it an excellent value for outings. Note that the site is closed every Monday, so be sure to check before visiting.

A recommended tip is to arrive around 10 AM to leisurely explore the forest path and finish your visit around lunchtime. Since UV rays can be strong in May, it’s advisable to bring a light hat or umbrella, and using the free guided service by a historical interpreter will make your experience of Yunggunneung even more engaging.
