Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation Successfully Concludes the 'Regional Representative Performing Arts Festival'
- Immerse in the Excitement of Haenam's Traditional Arts -
(The Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation announced the successful conclusion of the performance '2026 Regional Representative Performing Arts Festival: A Gathering of Haenam's Traditional Games' held on September 12 at the Seongmun Square of the Myeongnyang Battle Memorial Exhibition Hall.)
This performance was selected as an excellent project under the Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Special City proposal, moving beyond merely showcasing Haenam's traditional arts. It was structured around the theme 'A Day in Usuyong,' weaving the history, life, and community culture of Usuyong into a cohesive narrative that naturally engaged the audience.
The performance consisted of five acts, starting with 'The Story Bag Opens' and continuing through 'The Earth Awakens with Raindrops,' 'Sing of Abundant Harvests,' 'The Crimson Sunset of Uldolmok, the Spirit of the People,' and concluding with 'The Morning of Usuyong Rising Again,' spanning approximately 120 minutes to unfold the stories of Usuyong's life, history, and the traditional arts that have persisted within it.
Notably, the performance featured Usuyong's folk songs and Ganggangsullae, along with the Pungmul Group Haewon and Haenam K-Tigers, showcasing the diverse charms of traditional arts. It integrated the sounds of labor derived from agricultural culture and the communal excitement, reflecting the lives and spirit of the people of Usuyong centered around Uldolmok, offering the audience a unique traditional arts experience.
This year's performance focused on enhancing audience immersion compared to last year. Moving away from a standardized host-centered format, it utilized a Pannori-gun (a traditional storyteller) to organically connect the stories and performances, allowing each scene to flow within a single narrative, enabling the audience to enjoy the performance as if following the historical tales of Usuyong.
Additionally, the festival introduced unique collaborative stages, such as the joint performances of Pungmul Group Haewon-Haenam K-Tigers, Giyemudan-Haenam K-Tigers, and Haewon-Eupmyeon Pungmul Group, presenting a new paradigm for traditional performing arts in Haenam. The historical spaces of Usuyong where the performances took place naturally blended with traditional arts, enhancing the overall experience from a simple viewing performance to one where audiences could actively participate and experience Haenam's history and culture.
A representative from the Haenam Cultural Tourism Foundation stated, "This performance focused on making the sounds and movements that have been passed down in our region more accessible and enjoyable for today's audience, demonstrating that traditional arts are not difficult or unfamiliar, but rather cultural content that everyone can enjoy together."
They added, "We will continue to work with local traditional artists to continuously discover and develop Haenam's unique cultural resources into performances and content, establishing them as representative cultural tourism resources for Haenam."
