As you travel around Cheongpung Lake in Jecheon, you will notice another bridge right next to the Cheongpung Bridge.

Unlike the Cheongpung Bridge, which is used by vehicles, this bridge is home to chrysanthemums and silver grass instead of cars.

Benches and resting spots are placed along the way, providing a path for leisurely walks while gazing at the lake.

Originally completed in 1985 and serving as a transportation route along the lakeside, the old Cheongpung Bridge has reopened as the 'Cheongpung Lake Wind Garden.'

Currently, it is in a special operational phase before its official opening.

From October 1 to 31, 2026, Chungcheongbuk-do will hold a special opening for the Cheongpung Lake Wind Garden to welcome autumn.

The operational hours are from 10 AM to 5 PM daily.

This opening is not just a preview; it serves as a trial run to assess visitor movement, facility management, and areas for improvement ahead of the official opening in March 2027.

I visited the newly transformed old Cheongpung Bridge in October.

The story of the Cheongpung Bridge goes back about 40 years. Completed in 1985, it was a 315m long and 10m wide two-lane bridge connecting the east and west sides of Cheongpung Lake.

After the current Cheongpung Bridge was completed in 2012, the old bridge ceased to function as a transportation facility.

Instead of demolishing the old bridge, Chungcheongbuk-do chose to repurpose it.

By reinforcing safety while maintaining the existing structure, they transformed the vehicle pathway into a walking garden, a process known as 'upcycling.'

This project is introduced as the first nationwide example of repurposing a disused bridge into a garden.

Before creating the garden, the top priority was ensuring 'safety.'

A detailed safety inspection conducted in 2025 rated the bridge's structural safety as A, but its condition was rated D due to aging and damage.

Chungcheongbuk-do invested approximately 1.9 billion won to repair and pave the main components of the bridge.

After the repairs, the condition rating improved to A.

The garden transformation project was planned at a scale of about 3.6 billion won.

It involved the installation of safety fences and tourism sculptures first, followed by landscaping and garden facilities.

Walking through the Cheongpung Lake Wind Garden, you will see that it is more than just planting flowers on an old bridge.

The name 'Cheongpung Lake Wind Garden' was determined through a public naming contest.

In 2025, Chungcheongbuk-do received 565 suggestions from the public, and the name was selected to reflect the local symbolism of 'Cheongpung Myungwol' (Clear Wind and Bright Moon).

It describes a garden where the wind blows and moonlight lingers over Cheongpung Lake.

The special opening from October 1 to 31, 2026, showcases the autumn garden filled with chrysanthemums and silver grass.

Visitors can enjoy various cultural and experiential programs during weekends, including making plant pots with succulents.

This month serves as a 'trial operation' period ahead of the official opening in March 2027.

The Cheongpung Lake Wind Garden will be a point of connection for walking tourism, linking nearby attractions like the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex and the Cheongpung Lake Cable Car.

The special autumn opening runs until October 31, 2026. It is a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Cheongpung Lake in the fall.

Location: Cheongpung Bridge area, Cheongpung-myeon, Jecheon City, Chungcheongbuk-do.

Scale: Length 315m, Width 10m.

Main Facilities: Landscape planting area, observation deck, photo spots, benches, resting areas, and indoor rest areas.

Parking: There is no dedicated parking at the garden entrance. Please use the public parking lot about 300m away and walk to the garden.
