There is a flower called Baekilhong, which blooms during the summer and lasts for 100 days. I heard about the vibrant red blooms at Jeongeup Seohyeonsa under the blue sky and felt excited to visit.
Jeongeup Seohyeonsa is well-known as a site for Baekilhong, so I set off early in the morning to capture its beauty in photos. Upon arriving, I noticed a lot of vehicles in the parking lot. Let’s explore the beautiful Baekilhong at Jeongeup Seohyeonsa.
- Address: 13 Seojae-gil, Taein-myeon, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do
Seohyeonsa is the site of a shrine dedicated to Park Mun-hyo (1568-1593), who sacrificed his life for the country during the Imjin War. It has been designated as a cultural heritage site in Jeollabuk-do.
Park Mun-hyo lost his life at the young age of 26 while fighting the Japanese army on his way back to Hanyang. His wife, Song from Jincheon, is said to have taken her own life upon hearing of his death to maintain her loyalty. A shrine was built to honor their legacy, but it was destroyed in 1868 due to the abolition of Confucian shrines.
At Seohyeonsa, several Baekilhong trees over 200 years old surround the courtyard and walls, designated as protected trees. These trees, standing 6 to 7 meters tall, were in full bloom, welcoming countless visitors. The harmony of the red Baekilhong against the blue sky created a breathtaking scene.
Located in a quiet rural village, Seohyeonsa feels more like a hidden gem than a famous tourist spot, providing a tranquil space for healing. The parking lot can accommodate about 15 vehicles, and both entry and parking are free.
As I passed through the entrance, the presence of the large Baekilhong trees surrounding the building became even more striking. Seohyeonsa is not very large, making it a perfect place to explore quietly.
The traditional Korean beauty of the hanok walls, the lush green leaves of the Baekilhong, and the vibrant red flowers create a picturesque view that can only be seen in summer.
Seohyeonsa is a place where time stands still and the heart can rest. Be sure to visit next summer!
