Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest
The trees in the forest constantly absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis. As a result, forests maintain a relatively clean and pleasant environment compared to urban areas. People are aware of this, which is why they seek out forests whenever they have the chance.
To provide a comfortable resting place for those who visit the forest, various recreation forests have been established throughout Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province. Among them, we would like to introduce Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest, which is home to the spring that is the source of the Seomjin River.
Located in Baegun-myeon, Jin-an, Jeonbuk, Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest spans approximately 2 square kilometers and is equipped with various facilities, including accommodation buildings, a water play area, a forest culture square, and walking trails. This place serves not only as a lodging facility but also as a forest cultural experience center and a nature learning center.
Upon entering the visitor center at the entrance of the recreation forest, you can find information and then proceed to see a pavilion set beside the valley. The pavilion is inscribed with the name 'Palseonjeong' (Eight Immortals Pavilion). Stories related to fairies are often told about valleys with clear flowing water, and it seems that this valley has also been visited by fairies.
Crossing a small bridge past the pavilion leads to a resting area in the forest on the right. This shaded spot next to the valley offers a cool retreat, making it suitable for relaxing with friends or enjoying a quiet moment of contemplation alone.
Across from the forest resting area is a water play zone, which provided a refreshing escape for visitors during the particularly hot summer. However, it is currently closed, and we will have to wait until next summer to enjoy it again.
Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest offers various types of accommodations for a comfortable stay. There are several buildings of different types in various locations, allowing visitors to choose based on their preferences regarding the forest's location and building style. The 'House in the Forest,' which is closest to the entrance, consists of 10 independent units, categorized into 4-person (5 units), 8-person (4 units), and 15-person (1 unit) rooms.
There are also 2 traditional Korean houses, one of which is named 'Unhyangchae,' located near the House in the Forest. This separate space is convenient for group use, designed to accommodate 16 people, making it suitable for large families.
Moving to the side of the House in the Forest, you will find the 'House in the Mountain,' which consists of 4 units for 4 people and 4 units for 8 people. If you exit the House in the Forest and walk along the road upwards, you will find another traditional house, 'Suhyangchae,' which accommodates 8 people and feels like it is deeper in the mountains due to the elevation.
Continuing along the road from Suhyangchae, you will come across a two-story recreation building with 11 rooms for 4 people. This accommodation is far from other lodgings, making it ideal for group events with many participants.
The paths within Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest can be considered walking trails. The roads connecting the accommodations see very little vehicle traffic, making them pleasant for walking. The gardens around the recreation building also serve as light walking paths.
These trails provide both exercise and a nature learning experience. Enjoy the beauty of the surrounding trees and wildflowers as you walk. If you are with someone, try to guess the names of the trees and flowers you encounter. While flowers may not be abundant at this time, a chance encounter with a thistle made it appear even more beautiful.
As you walk, you may come across a large rock with an inspiring quote: “Let’s go to where the wind blows.” Upon reading this, I felt it perfectly described Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest. The cool breeze blowing from the valley was refreshing.
Continuing along the restricted vehicle path, you will find 'The Forest of Meditation.' The walking path winds through a forest with naturally scattered rocks, and a signpost engraved with familiar poetry stands nearby. Take a moment to pause and slowly read the poem aloud. In the Forest of Meditation, everyone becomes a poet.
Returning from the Forest of Meditation, you will see a sign directing you to Demisaem, the source of the Seomjin River. The peak where Demisaem is located is called 'Cheonsangdami,' meaning 'the peak that ascends to the sky' in the Jeolla dialect. The path to Demisaem is a narrow forest trail that follows the stream flowing from the spring.
The trail is a bit rough and steep, but the wildflowers along the way provide encouragement. One flower you might see is the 'Pheasant's Tail.' As you continue, you will arrive at a pavilion beside Demisaem, indicating that you have reached your destination.
Demisaem, the source of the Seomjin River, is modest. The river stretches 223 km (according to Wikipedia), and its beginning is quite humble compared to its length. This reflects a universal truth: while beginnings may not be grand, consistent progress can lead to significant development, much like the Seomjin River. From this perspective, it was a meaningful exploration.
On my way back from Demisaem, I spotted a dragonfly, reminding me that autumn is not far off. Dragonflies flying in the blue sky often symbolize the arrival of fall.
Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest is a popular getaway in summer, but it is also an excellent place for nature-friendly activities such as forest walks and exploring Demisaem in the autumn. When you need a time of rest, consider visiting Demisaem Natural Recreation Forest.
