Dasan Historical Park (Dasanwon) showcases the stunning landscape of a city named after the esteemed scholar Jeong Yak-yong, who significantly advanced the development of Namyangju. This modern city is adorned with impressive buildings, yet the process of its development unearthed various archaeological relics from the Neolithic to the Joseon periods. Dasanwon and Dolmen Park are unique spaces where the past and present coexist.
Dasanwon (Neighborhood Park No. 3) recreates the hometown scenery of Jeong Yak-yong, featuring the wisdom embodied in his inventions throughout the park. Visitors can see the geojunggi, a traditional lifting device using the principle of pulleys, and the nokro, which was used to lift heavy stones during the construction of Suwon Hwaseong.
Additionally, the yuhyeonggeo, a cart designed by Jeong Yak-yong for the construction of Suwon Hwaseong, is on display. This cart innovatively addresses the weaknesses of large wheels and cumbersome sleds, reflecting Jeong's humanitarian spirit and practical approach.
Just beyond Dasanwon, a short walk up a hill leads to Dolmen Park, transporting visitors back to prehistoric times. Informational signs provide detailed insights into the processes of quarrying, transporting, and constructing dolmens.
In Dolmen Park, visitors can explore restored ancient tombs discovered during the development of Dasan New Town. The exhibition includes two stone chamber tombs from the Three Kingdoms period and two stone coffin tombs from the Goryeo period, making this a valuable educational space for children to learn about history.
The stone chamber tombs, constructed with weathered rock walls, are believed to have reused Goguryeo tombs during the Unified Silla period, stimulating historical imagination. Inside the Goryeo stone coffin tomb, artifacts such as celadon bowls and iron lamps were unearthed, creating a mystical atmosphere reminiscent of time travel.
At the top of the park stands the Gaun-dong dolmen, designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 80 of Gyeonggi Province. This southern-style dolmen, featuring a supporting stone, is intriguing as its name originates from this very dolmen.
The Gaun-dong dolmen measures 3.3 meters in length, 1.6 meters in width, and 0.6 meters in height, aligned with the flow of the Han River. The presence of stone arrowheads in the vicinity suggests it is a Bronze Age burial site, offering valuable insights into the natural views and burial customs of ancient people.
On a warm autumn day, Dasan Historical Park is the perfect quiet retreat for a leisurely stroll. Located on the outskirts of Dasan New Town, it features well-maintained walking paths and benches for reflection. Families can enjoy a peaceful outing while experiencing prehistoric education.
