Hello! This is the official blog reporter group of Ulsan Metropolitan City.
Today, we would like to introduce the Ulsan City Library, a multifaceted cultural space that transcends the past of Ulsan and envisions a brilliant future!
As the refreshing breeze of September ushers in the season of reading, the abundant harvest festival has also arrived, shining bright like the full moon.
With the heat of this unusually hot summer fading, the mornings and evenings have become quite cool. Therefore, I visited the Ulsan City Library, located by the Yeocheon Stream in Nam-gu, Ulsan, to fill my mind with calm and enriching thoughts.
The Ulsan City Library is currently situated at 140, Kkotdaenari-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan. Just over a decade ago, this area was home to a waste treatment facility, shunned by citizens due to its foul smell and pollution. However, Ulsan Metropolitan City made a bold and remarkable decision to fill this abandoned space with the vitality of knowledge and culture. By establishing a public library in what was once an undesirable facility, it transformed into a beloved space for citizens.
Currently, the library is running the Ulsan Book of the Year campaign, along with events for September's reading month, allowing citizens to engage with books in various ways. This initiative includes literary performances based on books, meetings with authors of the selected works, and outdoor reading programs.
One such event was a successful meeting with the author Kim Ae-ran of 'I Said Hello' on September 13.
Additionally, a special exhibition titled 'The Library of Prehistoric Times: Reading Rock Art' will take place at the Ulsan Library in 2026, commemorating the first anniversary of the registration of the Bangudae Petroglyphs as a World Heritage site.
The Ulsan City Library is designed to be accessible for everyone, regardless of age or interests, allowing full utilization of its spaces. The first floor features a children's library and a digital resource room, designed with safety and child-friendly aesthetics.
The children's library is a warm and inviting space where kids can not only read but also play with toys, creating a joyful atmosphere filled with their laughter, especially on weekends.
Across from the children's library, the digital resource room operates alongside a facility for individuals with disabilities, ensuring accessibility and providing a forward-looking multimedia environment.
The third floor's comprehensive resource room offers a spacious area for contemplation and immersion, truly embodying the phrase 'the universe of books.' The high ceilings and abundant natural light create a welcoming atmosphere, making it a popular spot for readers.
The Ulsan City Library is not just an architectural marvel; it is a source of pride for the citizens of Ulsan, nurturing the intellectual richness of 1.1 million residents. As it continues to grow into a supportive universe for the dreams of future generations, we encourage you to visit the library before the reading season of September ends, whether with family, friends, or even just for yourself.
