Before heading up to the Malsan Ancient Tombs, there is a hidden gem of a temple called Kwanumsa. While it may be easily overlooked by visitors from afar, it serves as a spiritual sanctuary for the residents of Ham-an.

2. Exploring the Tranquil Temple

Kwanumsa Temple is a small temple located on flat land near the village, cherished by the locals. It is conveniently situated right below the UNESCO World Heritage site of Malsan Ancient Tombs, with a bamboo grove surrounding the temple that muffles the noise of the city. This creates a peaceful atmosphere, allowing visitors to relax in a tranquil setting.

This quiet temple, which is a branch of Haeinsa Temple, offers a space for meditation and prayer. I encountered a kind nun who warmly welcomed me. During our brief conversation, I learned that the temple was established about 100 years ago and is frequented by local government officials and residents.

Although Kwanumsa may not be a major tourist destination, it is a serene place that brings comfort to visitors. Many locals stop by to pray, making it a part of their daily lives. On Buddha's birthday, the temple can get quite busy with visitors.

3. The Shortest Route to Malsan Ancient Tombs

The Malsan Ancient Tombs is one of my favorite places in Ham-an. I make it a point to visit whenever I travel there. From the Ham-an Museum parking lot, it takes about 20 minutes to walk to Tombs No. 2 and No. 3.

Sometimes, the uphill walk can feel like a light workout, but the view of the ancient tombs that unfolds after the climb is rewarding and peaceful.

However, if you access the tombs via the back side of Kwanumsa Temple, you can reach them in just 10 minutes. While the path is not completely flat, a leisurely 5-minute walk along the steps or railing will lead you to Tomb No. 4, and another 5 minutes will take you to Tombs No. 2 and No. 3. The path is lit at night, making it safe to walk.

If you wish to see the Malsan Ancient Tombs but find a long walk daunting in summer or winter, this shorter route is worth considering.

4. Visitor Review

While Kwanumsa Temple may not be a destination that tourists seek out specifically, it becomes significant if you plan to visit the Malsan Ancient Tombs. This route can save time and effort for those looking to minimize their walking distance.

I found it to be a wonderful place to quietly cleanse my weary mind while making wishes. The deep energy of the Malsan Ancient Tombs added a sense of reverence and specialness to my experience. It provided complete healing in its serene landscape, and when I return, I plan to revisit the Malsan Ancient Tombs via this path.
