Ulleungdo is a representative volcanic island of Korea, formed by underwater volcanic activity that began around 2.5 million years ago.

The entire island is often referred to as a gigantic geological museum, boasting a variety of volcanic and coastal erosion landscapes.

Recognized for its geological significance, it has been designated as a major geological site of the National Geopark.

Among these, the Jeodong Coastal Trail is an excellent trekking spot where you can closely experience Ulleungdo's geological value and stunning natural scenery.

“The Trekking-Friendly Jeodong Coastal Trail”

This time, I explored the Jeodong Coastal Trail, part of the Ulleung Haedam-gil.

Starting from the Jeodong entrance, I walked to the Sora Steps and returned via the Chotdae Rock.

The trail is gentle, making it a pleasant walk that takes less than an hour, suitable for everyone.

Upon entering the trail, the majestic coastal scenery unique to Ulleungdo immediately captivates the eye.

The cliffs shaped by waves and winds over millions of years serve as a living natural textbook of the volcanic island's formation.

The rugged rock layers and steep cliffs vividly demonstrate the grandeur of nature.

On a calm day, seagulls greet you, and you can enjoy the leisurely sight of fishermen at sea.

You can see the Haengnam Lighthouse and the distant Jukdo Island.

As you walk along the coastal path, you'll encounter three beautiful maritime bridges.

Standing on the first bridge, the transparent emerald sea unfolds beneath you, and the lush green mountains combined with Ulleungdo's coastal cliffs create a breathtaking view.

The next bridge offers another perspective of Ulleungdo's scenic beauty.

Standing on the bridge feels like walking on water, with the volcanic rock coastline and bizarre cliffs coming into sharper focus.

While it may feel a bit intimidating, the sturdy metal bridge and railings provide safety.

The true charm of the Jeodong Haengnam Coastal Trail lies in this section.

The view created by the Haengnam Lighthouse, Jukdo, and the dazzling emerald sea will remain an unforgettable scene from your Ulleungdo trip.

After crossing two bridges, you enter a tunnel section created along the cliffs.

While passing through the Piam Tunnel, designed to avoid falling rocks, you can closely observe the unique volcanic rocks formed by volcanic activity.

Walking between the massive cliffs and sea caves feels like a geological exploration, a unique experience only available in Ulleungdo!

After passing through the tunnel, there’s a photo zone that you can’t miss, where you can capture another memorable shot of Ulleungdo.

The last bridge leads to the Sora Steps, the highlight of this course.

The view of the East Sea from the path along the coastline is clearer and bluer than anywhere else, leaving you mesmerized by the jade-like transparent sea.

You can truly appreciate the popularity of the Jeodong Coastal Trail during your visit to Ulleungdo.

When you reach the Sora Steps observation deck, shaped like a conch shell, you can take in the views of the Haengnam Lighthouse, Bukjeo Rock, Jukdo, and the endlessly stretching East Sea.

On the way back, I encountered the Chotdae Rock, a symbol of Jeodong Port.

Chotdae Rock is a representative coastal erosion feature formed by volcanic rock, shaped by the erosion of waves and winds over time.

Its towering presence above the sea resembles a candlestick, making it one of the iconic landscapes of Ulleungdo, showcasing the beauty created by nature.

There’s also a legend that a kind daughter who anxiously awaited her father, who went squid fishing, turned into this rock, known as the Filial Daughter Rock.

The Haengnam Coastal Trail is not just a 'beautiful walking path'.

It is a precious geological heritage where you can experience the process of Ulleungdo's formation and the traces of nature over millions of years.

The emerald sea, Haengnam Lighthouse, Chotdae Rock, and the scenery of Jeodong Port offer an emotional experience that can only be found in Ulleungdo.

If you visit Jeodong Port early in the morning, you can witness the lively auction of seafood, including squid, at the Jeodong Fish Market.

You can enjoy another aspect of your trip by catching a glimpse of the vibrant life of Ulleungdo fishermen alongside the beautiful nature.

I highly recommend walking the Jeodong Haengnam Coastal Trail when visiting Ulleungdo.

The breathtaking landscapes shaped over millions of years await you, so come and enjoy Ulleungdo!

Please note that there may be days when access is restricted due to adverse weather conditions!
