Last week, I visited Bongjeongsa Temple in Andong!
On a bright autumn day, I encountered colorful lanterns,
ancient trees, the national treasures Geungnakjeon and Daeungjeon,
a world heritage photo exhibition, and beautiful chrysanthemums.
Here’s a glimpse of the must-visit spots in Andong.
Looking for a place to enjoy the lovely autumn weather,
I found Bongjeongsa Temple.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site,
it was a place I had always wanted to visit.
Coincidentally, my visit coincided with the 2026 World Heritage Festival,
resulting in a larger crowd than usual.
The bright weather combined with the colorful lanterns
made the autumn scenery of Bongjeongsa feel even more special.
Bongjeongsa offers a chance to appreciate traditional architecture
alongside the beauty of nature,
making it an attractive destination for autumn outings.
Bongjeongsa is located at the foot of Cheondung Mountain.
It’s a perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city,
where you can leisurely stroll and enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional temple.
On the day I visited, there were quite a few cars due to the festival.
You could feel the movement of visitors from the entrance,
and I realized parking would take more time than usual.
The colorful lanterns hanging at the entrance immediately caught my eye.
They blended beautifully with the tranquil atmosphere of the temple.
Under the clear autumn sky,
the colors of the lanterns appeared even more vivid.
Walking further into Bongjeongsa,
I was impressed by the ancient trees.
Their thick trunks and naturally extending branches
made me feel the history they have witnessed.
Unlike flashy tourist spots,
the natural scenery harmonized with the temple buildings,
creating a serene charm.
The sunlight filtering through the trees
and the quiet halls complemented each other beautifully.
Taking a moment to pause and look around,
I felt a sense of tranquility that I often miss in my busy life.
Bongjeongsa was founded in 672 during the reign of King Munmu of Silla,
making it a temple with a long history.
In 2018, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site
as part of 'Historic Monuments and Sites of Korea.'
The must-see cultural assets at Bongjeongsa are Geungnakjeon and Daeungjeon.
Geungnakjeon is one of the representative buildings of Bongjeongsa.
It is the oldest wooden structure remaining in Korea,
making it historically significant.
The appearance of this wooden structure, which has endured the test of time,
has a heavy beauty that differs from ornate decorations.
Examining the proportions of the roof, pillars, and building
reveals the wisdom and intricacy of ancient architecture.
Daeungjeon is another essential site to visit at Bongjeongsa.
Its unique atmosphere and neat structure are impressive.
Although they are located within the same temple,
Geungnakjeon and Daeungjeon have different architectural characteristics and meanings,
making it enjoyable to compare them.
During my visit, I encountered the preparations for the festival,
with yellow chrysanthemums filling the area,
creating a perfect autumn atmosphere.
The world heritage photo exhibition was also quite interesting!
While world heritage sites may seem distant and complex,
seeing various heritage through photos makes them feel more approachable.
Experiencing the exhibition in a space where actual cultural heritage exists
allowed me to connect the architecture with its history.
This visit to Bongjeongsa was a wonderful experience
to enjoy nature and history on a bright autumn day.
From the colorful lanterns at the entrance
to the ancient trees, national treasures,
and the various displays,
there was much to see and appreciate.
Even though there were many visitors due to the festival,
it was heartening to see so many people interested in cultural heritage.
Instead of just quickly touring the famous buildings,
I recommend taking the time to enjoy the surroundings
and leisurely walking among the trees at Bongjeongsa.
