As the saying goes, 'Happiness is not just about reaching your destination, but about enjoying the journey itself.' When you feel the urge to escape somewhere, the highway rest area can be a safe space that provides the necessary time and route. Having frequently traveled to Hamann and Uiryeong, I decided to stop by the Hamann Rest Area to explore it more thoroughly.
The Hamann Rest Area has a unique structure with both Suncheon and Busan directions adjacent to each other. The Suncheon direction rest area is familiar to those traveling towards Suncheon and Yeosu via the Namhae Expressway.
Hamann ECO Friends
This is a themed park representing the Hamann (Suncheon direction) rest area. It was a pleasant surprise to find a space where you can get a taste of Hamann. The park features solar panels, green spaces, and a themed area based on the archaeological site of Arakaya, all within a 60,000 m² area.
It is the first rest area in the country to install and operate solar panels in its parking lot, producing eco-friendly energy. The park also includes a sculpture of the Arakaya lotus flower, pottery shaped like a wheel, and a picnic area with a pond designed to resemble patterned pottery, providing a relaxing spot for weary drivers.
Various Amenities
There is an installation inspired by Hamann's specialty, watermelon, which seems to be a popular photo spot for visitors. While many people come and go, I decided to take a photo from the back. Doesn’t it add to the joy of traveling?
The rest area offers clean and spacious restrooms, charging facilities through an unmanned system, and operates a late-night restaurant, which is great news for drivers on long trips.
As expected, the fish cake and hot dog corner remains a favorite among visitors. I cherish the memories of enjoying these treats with my children when they were younger and still indulge in fish cake skewers every time I visit, regardless of the season.
Unlike the outdoor food options, there are restaurants and convenience stores inside, as well as an unmanned vending area. Although it was quiet when I visited before meal times, it can get quite busy during peak hours.
I noticed designated seating for people with disabilities, wheelchair users, the elderly, and those with infants. Having recently been in a hospital, I was touched by such thoughtful considerations.
Hamann Local Food Happiness Market
This market sells safe and fresh local produce. The Hamann Local Food Happiness Market opened on May 17, 2024, and aims to create a mutually beneficial space for both producers and consumers.
It provides safe and fresh regional agricultural products for Namhae Expressway users and aims to increase the income of local farmers. The market showcases Hamann's specialties, including watermelon, Gaya white melon, paprika, tomatoes, apple mango, sweet persimmon, grapes, peaches, and dried persimmons.
With a total investment of 250 million won, the market is a lightweight steel structure with an area of 78 m². It offers a variety of products, including grains, medicinal herbs, and handmade crafts.
Inside the refrigerated showcase, fresh vegetables, fruits, sauces like doenjang and gochujang, kimchi, and yogurt are neatly displayed for consumers.
While I intended to buy the local specialty, pillow watermelon, I opted for ripe peaches instead due to the weight. The Hamann Local Food Happiness Market operates from 9 AM to 6 PM, so if you stop by the rest area, make sure to visit for fresh produce. You won’t regret it.
