When visiting Ulleungdo, most people are drawn to its beautiful sea, mountains, and landscapes.
This time, I explored a different place.
Located just next to the Ulleung-eup office,
the Old Governor's Residence is about a 5-minute walk from Dodong Port.
This site provides a glimpse into the changes that have shaped modern Ulleungdo.

The Old Governor's Residence encountered in Dodong
Upon arrival, the old wooden structure immediately catches the eye.
The garden features trees that seem to have stood the test of time.
This place is not just about preserving an old building.
It was once the living space of the Ulleungdo governor,
and inside, you can see wooden doors, windows, and corridors that connect the rooms,
reflecting the living conditions of that era.
Considering the current Ulleung-eup office and the surrounding Dodong Port,
it naturally raises curiosity about the role this place played in Ulleungdo's administrative center.
In October 1962,
this residence became a cornerstone of Ulleungdo's modernization.
One significant reason to visit is the record from 1962.
On October 11, 1962, Park Chung-hee, then the chairman of the National Reconstruction Council,
visited Ulleungdo.
At that time, Ulleungdo was not equipped with the transportation and living infrastructure we see today.
After touring various places on the island,
he stayed at this governor's residence.
Within the residence, there are displays related to his visit, including a recreated dining scene.
Experiencing the events that took place in Ulleungdo over 60 years ago at the actual location
is a unique charm that sets this place apart from other historical exhibitions.
The transformation of Dodong and Jeodong Ports
As you explore the exhibition,
you can also see the old images of Dodong and Jeodong Ports.
Today, they are familiar ports where tourists embark and disembark,
but the historical photographs reveal a very different scene.
With the expansion of port facilities and improved transportation conditions,

The exhibition also includes records of the Dokdo Volunteer Defense members being invited to the Blue House
and receiving medals after the 1962 visit to Ulleungdo.
On one side, there are stories of children living in Ulleungdo,
and on the other, stories of those who worked to protect Dokdo.
This space allows us to reflect on the lives of people from Ulleungdo
and the values that Ulleungdo has upheld.
After exploring the exhibition, I took a slow look around outside the building.
As I gazed at the old wooden structure and trees,
the fact that this was once someone's living space felt even more real.
There are also air raid shelters around the residence.
While not prominently visible,
when viewed alongside the old residence,
it serves as another trace of the historical context and living conditions of Ulleungdo at that time.
The Old Governor's Residence is not merely a place where Park Chung-hee stayed.
It encapsulates a range of modern historical events in Ulleungdo,
from Park Chung-hee's visit in 1962
to the changes in Dodong and Jeodong Ports,
the invitation of Ulleungdo children to the Blue House,
and the stories of the Dokdo Volunteer Defense members.
Through this old residence,
we can encounter the changes in Ulleungdo's lifestyle, transportation, and port,
as well as the stories of the people who have lived here.
