A Day Trip to Buan: Enjoying the West Sea

As the heat begins to wane, there are days when you want to escape with friends, loved ones, or family, even if just for a day.
This guide introduces a delightful day trip to Buan, which can be a small gift as we prepare for autumn.

Our first stop was Baekhap Restaurant. We set off early in the morning and arrived around 12:30, just in time for lunch. Being a seaside restaurant, we naturally gravitated towards seafood.
Despite it being a weekday, the lunch crowd was quite busy, and the restaurant was nearly full. The space was neither too large nor too small, making it cozy.
What to eat? While the restaurant is named 'Baekhap', we opted for a simple grilled fish set meal. The course meal features a variety of dishes including soups and grilled items, which would be great for entertaining guests. However, the grilled fish set didn’t specify the type of fish, so we waited with a sense of anticipation.
The standout dish was the soup, which tasted like clams. It had a mild flavor and a hint of the sea, without any spiciness. Alongside it were various side dishes like seasoned seaweed and pickled squid, which were fresh and delicious. You could refill these from a self-service bar.
When the grilled fish platter arrived, it included flounder, mackerel, and two unidentified types of fish, one of which had many small bones resembling mackerel. It was a delightful experience, as fresh fish always tastes good, no matter how you eat it.
The next stop was Gyeokpo Beach and Cheonseokgang. Gyeokpo Beach is just a minute's drive from Baekhap Restaurant. Parking used to be paid, but now it seems to be free.
To see the UNESCO-designated Cheonseokgang, checking the tide schedule is essential. You can find the tide information online easily. For example, on September 21, 2026, the low tide times are 05:16 and 16:42, meaning you can visit around 14:42 to 18:42.
Unfortunately, on the day of our visit, we missed the viewing time for Cheonseokgang, so we enjoyed our time at the beach instead. The weather was fantastic, and many visitors flocked to Gyeokpo Beach. The sand felt particularly fine, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Next, we visited Susungdang, famous for its canola flowers blooming every March and April. It’s a lovely spot for a leisurely stroll, especially in the off-season.
Lastly, we stopped by Café Cushion, located next to Byeonsan Beach. The café has a warm atmosphere with a brown color palette and offers brunch options. However, there is a one-hour limit on table usage, which was a bit surprising.
In summary, this day trip to Buan highlights some of the best spots in the area. Whether you visit all or just a few, it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the West Sea.
