The 2026 Suwon Hwaseong Media Art Festival, hosted by the Suwon Cultural Foundation, has officially opened. This festival marks the return of one of Suwon's three major festivals, heralding the early autumn of Suwon. The event will take place from September 19 to October 6 at Jang-an Park, Hwaso Gate, and Jang-an Gate.

For six years, the festival has continued to thrive, showcasing the success of the Suwon Hwaseong Media Art. This large-scale media art festival reinterprets King Jeongjo's dreams and visions through vibrant light displays. Since its debut in 2021 with the theme 'The Moonlight of Thousands: The Dream of Jeongjo Becomes Light', this journey of light has continued for six years. Last year's festival, themed 'A New Future, A Festival for All – New Light Feast', utilized AI technology for special effects and cinematic narratives, attracting over 510,000 visitors over 16 days.

The festival's success can be attributed to its diverse attractions and engagement strategies. The official festival brochure highlights that it not only features media art but also transforms the audience into active participants through various content. Last year's event included promotional booths offering programs like 'Media Walk Along Suwon Hwaseong', climate crisis challenges, and local commerce activation events, which significantly boosted visitor engagement.

The unique concept of the festival also plays a crucial role. The intersection of 21st-century digital media technology with 18th-century architectural techniques creates an experience akin to a time travel spanning over 230 years. It promises to be a nighttime festival showcasing the beauty and coexistence of Suwon through large-scale media art over 18 days.

The highlight of the festival is the media art presentation 'New Light Joy: Suwon Hwaseong, Blossoming in Light' at Hwaso Gate, where the entire wall transforms into a gigantic screen, delivering a message that signifies 'I have a precious guest'. This media art will be shown three times daily at 19:30, 20:30, and 21:30, with each showing lasting about 35 minutes.

Additionally, the media art 'The King's Path, Companionship' at Jang-an Gate narrates the story of Suwon Hwaseong through lights, sounds, and special effects, allowing visitors to feel the welcoming spirit of King Jeongjo. This will be screened approximately every 15 minutes from 19:00 to 22:00.

At Jang-an Park Media Park, interactive programs invite visitors to engage actively. Kim Yeon’s work 'Light it up' allows participants to illuminate their wishes through voice interaction. There will also be a large Jenga game available for public participation from 20:00 to 22:00.

Moreover, interactive nighttime programs such as 'Bubble Lighting' and 'Responsive Lighting Art' encourage active engagement, enhancing the festival experience. The audience can feel like creators as their movements influence the artwork, showcasing the organizers' commitment to fostering interactive content.

Local collaboration zones like 'Hyanggung Store' and 'Suwon Store' feature regional specialties, allowing visitors to enjoy local crafts and food, enriching their festival experience. The festival also includes events to support local businesses, offering rewards for receipts from nearby stores.
