The cool breeze of autumn has arrived, making it a perfect season for enjoying music outdoors. The '2026 Suwon Jazz Festival' took place at Gwanggyo Lake Park from September 18 to 19. I visited the festival on the first day, the 18th, and spread my mat on the spacious lawn to enjoy the performances, experiencing the unique charm of an outdoor music festival compared to a typical concert hall.
This year marks the 11th edition of the Suwon Jazz Festival, a prominent outdoor music event in Suwon held at Gwanggyo Lake Park. The festival showcases a variety of music genres including jazz, soul, R&B, funk, and Latin. Anyone can attend without prior reservations, and instead of sitting in designated seats, attendees can relax on the grass while enjoying the music, which adds to the festival's appeal.
When I arrived, I noticed many attendees had already set up their mats across the lawn. As time passed, the area filled up with families, couples, and friends sharing food while waiting for the performances, creating a picnic-like atmosphere.
The festival featured a lineup of diverse musicians over the two days. On September 18, the performances began at 5 PM with the Kim Yeon-sung Jazz Violin Quintet, the winners of the Rising Star Contest at the '2026 Suwon Jazz Fringe Festa.' Following them, the Rush Life Jazz Band performed at 5:40 PM, and as the sun began to set, performances continued with Nanjin at 6:40 PM and R&B singer-songwriter g0nny at 7:40 PM. The first day's performances wrapped up with Jung Dong-hwan and Funk Messengers at 8:40 PM.
The second day, September 19, continued with performances from the Moon Mi-hyang Quartet, Jo Jae-beom Latin Unit, Funky Tonight, and the Lee Eun-mi × Min Kyung-in Trio, showcasing a variety of musical styles from jazz to Latin and funk.
As the sun set, the night view of Gwanggyo Lake Park combined with stage lights created a different ambiance, enhancing the festival's charm of experiencing various music genres in one place.
For my visit, I brought a mat and a small table. Since the festival allows attendees to freely choose their spots, I highly recommend bringing a mat. Having a small table made it convenient to enjoy food purchased on-site while comfortably enjoying the performances for several hours.
As the performances continued into the evening, it was wise to prepare a light jacket depending on the weather. If you plan to take many photos or videos, don't forget a portable charger. Additionally, a small bag for snacks or personal trash can be handy for cleaning up after the event. With the festival being an outdoor event, bringing essential items along with your mat will make your experience more enjoyable.
Food is an essential part of the festival experience. Various food trucks and booths from local vendors offered a range of options, including kimchi pancakes and other familiar dishes. Many attendees enjoyed these warm snacks while listening to the jazz melodies, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Alcoholic beverages were also available for purchase at the festival. Before buying, attendees had to verify their age at the adult verification zone and receive a wristband, making it convenient for subsequent purchases.
Restroom access is crucial at outdoor festivals. Temporary restrooms were located nearby, and several park restrooms were available, ensuring minimal wait times during my visit.
Another notable feature was the reusable container collection zone, where attendees could return used containers after the event. Many guests quickly tidied up their areas and sorted their trash, creating an impressive sight of community participation in keeping the festival clean.
As the stage lights illuminated the lawn, a different atmosphere unfolded. The Suwon Jazz Festival is not just about watching performances; it’s a festival where one can spread a mat, enjoy delicious food, and freely immerse in music. The sense of community among local residents preparing food and helping clean up after the festival added to the overall experience.
