Shinan is taking a step forward as the world’s sought-after bonsai city.
Exciting news has arrived for Shinan County!
After fierce competition with major candidates from China, the United States, and Europe, Shinan County has been selected as the host for the 2028 World Bonsai Convention (WBC).
This international event, which garners attention from bonsai enthusiasts worldwide, will take place in the beautiful 1004 islands of Shinan. We anticipate that this hosting opportunity will significantly promote Shinan's bonsai culture and the value of its bonsai gardens on a global scale.
Shinan County participated in the 10th World Bonsai Convention (WBC) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from August 29 to 31.
Through strengthening international bonsai networks and actively working towards securing the 2028 event, we have finally achieved this significant milestone.
The World Bonsai Convention, which began in 1989 in Omiya, Japan, has been hosted in major cities around the world, including the United States, South Korea, Germany, China, Japan, and Australia.
This time, the stage will be set in Shinan.
This achievement is not a result of overnight efforts. Since the start of the Korea Bonsai Competition in 2022, Shinan County has been dedicated to promoting local bonsai culture and steadily expanding its reach.
In particular, the successful hosting of the 8th Asia-Pacific Bonsai Friendship Federation (ABFF) Convention in 2025 has recognized our capability to manage international-scale events.
These accumulated efforts have led to the valuable result of securing the 2028 World Bonsai Convention.
With this convention, Shinan County plans to evolve from being merely a stopover for tourists to a destination where people from around the world can enjoy extended stays.
We will enhance tourism infrastructure, including accommodations and dining, and create a sustainable ecological tourism environment that residents can experience directly.
Through these efforts, we aim to usher in an era of 5 million annual tourists and inject new vitality into the local economy.
The selection of Shinan as the host for the 2028 World Bonsai Convention marks a new starting point where Shinan's beautiful nature and bonsai culture meet the world.
Through bonsai, we will connect with the world, invigorate the local area through tourism, and ensure that the benefits lead to the happiness of our residents!
Please continue to support Shinan's new leap towards becoming a world-class bonsai city.
