The autumn season in Dangjin begins with the Chungnam Provincial Sports Festival.
It will be held from September 3 to September 6 for four days.
This year marks the 78th Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Sports Festival,
with approximately 12,000 participants from 15 cities and counties in Chungnam.
There are 30 official events and 2 demonstration events, totaling 32 events,
taking place throughout Dangjin, centered around the Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex.
We took an early look at the venue.
The Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex is located in Godeam-myeon, Dangjin City,
and is a comprehensive sports town.
It consists of the main stadium, indoor gymnasium, community sports park,
auxiliary soccer fields, tennis courts, and gateball courts.
Parking lots are available between each facility.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Sports Festival will be held here,
along with soccer, athletics, tennis, ground golf, and gateball matches.
During our visit, track line painting was underway at the main stadium.
The stadium is being renovated ahead of the provincial sports festival.
Some areas were peeling or faded,
but they will be improved for optimal competition conditions.
Many trees have been planted along the rest areas and parking lots,
with the stadiums spaced out in between.
The Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex and the indoor gymnasium face each other across a large plaza.
It was quiet during our visit,
but many people will participate and cheer during the provincial sports festival.
Behind each facility are tennis and gateball courts.
The Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex has a total floor area of 4,200 square meters,
with one basement level and three above ground.
The seating capacity is 11,700,
with a grassy area in between.
Visitors can spread out mats for a more comfortable viewing experience.
The main stadium features a natural grass soccer field and an athletics track.
The grass is in excellent condition,
and the athletics track meets international standards with 8 lanes.
I walked briefly on the side opposite the painting preparations.
The soft urethane surface will protect athletes' ankles during fast-paced events.
The 11,000 seats are arranged in front of the stadium
and on the opposite side, spread across three levels, allowing for a full view of the track and field.
The seating area connects to the indoor facility,
providing optimal access to amenities like restrooms.
Although summer heat persists,
the main viewing area with the announcer's booth has been equipped with awnings to shield from rain and sun.
The main stadium's viewing area features a linear section designated as S1.E1.
It connects directly to the field.
Between the front and back seating areas is a grassy picnic zone.
This allows for a more relaxed viewing experience along with a view of the overall sports complex.
However, the lack of sunshade means that visitors should prepare personal items like hats and umbrellas.
Lighting towers have also been installed for night games.
The path to the restrooms is the same as the seating area.
Beyond that, the tennis courts can be seen,
but due to safety measures, the area is enclosed and cannot be viewed from the outside.
Facing the main stadium is the Dangjin Indoor Gymnasium.
The opening ceremony will be held at the main stadium,
while the indoor gymnasium will host the closing ceremony and volleyball matches.
The indoor gymnasium is usually closed and only opens during events.
The Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Sports Festival will be held at 37 venues across Dangjin City.
The gateball and ground golf competitions will take place at the gateball court and auxiliary fields of the Dangjin Comprehensive Sports Complex.
The festival began in 1945 and celebrates its 78th edition this year.
Originally scheduled for 2020 in Dangjin,
the event was canceled due to COVID-19.
After being held in Boryeong in 2022, Geumsan in 2023, and Seosan in 2024,
Dangjin has been chosen again as the host for the 78th edition in 2026.
Dangjin ranked third overall in 2022, 2023, and 2024,
and received a commendation in 2025.
This year, as the host city, we hope for even better results.
