Must-Visit Places in Goeisan County

In May, under a clear blue sky,

I set off to find the natural monument, 'Goeisan Jukseok-ri Pine Tree,' located in Jukseok-ri, Yeonpung-myeon, Goeisan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.

I wanted to leave behind the complexities of daily life and heal in the embrace of nature. What I encountered there was far more profound than I had anticipated, revealing the majestic vitality of nature.

The drive towards Jukseok-ri was a healing journey in itself.

The cool road stretching beyond the window, surrounded by verdant mountains, refreshed my eyes.

The quiet asphalt road leading into the village was peaceful, with orchards and fields lining the sides, radiating the cozy charm of a rural village.

The distant view of the highway blending with mountain ranges created a unique beauty where modernity and nature coexist harmoniously.

As I walked further along the village path, a massive pine tree silhouette began to emerge through the trees, exuding an extraordinary presence.

When I finally faced the Goeisan Jukseok-ri Pine Tree, standing tall on an open hill, I couldn't help but gasp in awe.

According to the information board, this pine tree is estimated to be around 500 years old, standing at 21.2 meters tall with a circumference of 3.48 meters at chest height.

It has been guarding the entrance of the village since before the establishment of Jukseok-ri village about 400 years ago, serving as a sacred tree for the villagers.

Reading about its role in wishing for the well-being of the villagers made it feel like a sacred entity.

Approaching the tree, its grandeur was even more overwhelming.

The trunk leaned slightly at about a 5-degree angle from the ground, with rough, thick reddish bark on the upper part and dark bark below, resembling a badge of honor from enduring the test of time.

Despite suffering damage during a heavy snowfall in winter 2003, which broke some branches, it stands proudly supported by metal braces, exuding dignity and vitality that inspires awe.

The area around the tree is neatly arranged with grassy hills, stone walls, and a round metal fence for protection.

Walking around the tree, it showcased different charms from every angle.

Looking up from below, its branches stretched dynamically against the blue sky, resembling a grand ink painting.

From the hilltop, the refreshing view of the cool road network of Yeonpung-myeon and overlapping green peaks filled my heart with exhilaration.

Imagining that scholars from centuries past might have paused in the same spot to admire this pine tree while dreaming of success brought a unique emotion.

In front of this grateful tree, which miraculously survived the Korean War, my heart felt solemn.

The Goeisan Jukseok-ri Pine Tree is more than just an 'old large tree'; it is a special space that allows one to feel the greatness of nature and the depth of time.

If you wish to escape the complexities of the city and find peace and comfort, I strongly recommend meeting this beautiful pine tree standing silently under the blue sky.

The unspoken comfort offered by centuries will be a great strength for your weary daily life.
