Must-Visit Places in Goeasan County
As you wander into Cheong-an-myeon, Goeasan County, following the serene and tranquil rural landscape, you will encounter a small, vintage wooden structure gracefully perched on a gentle hill beyond the fields.
This is the Jangdam Chungshingak, designated as a cultural heritage site of Chungcheongbuk-do.
Following the brown signpost standing by the roadside into a small path beside the fields, you can see a picturesque view of Chungshingak harmoniously blending with the golden rice fields.
Carefully laid stone steps follow the gentle slope, leading to a pavilion characterized by its red decorative paint and tiled roof, instilling a sense of reverence right from the entrance.
Reading the information board in front of Chungshingak reveals the profound history embedded in this place. During the year 1728, amidst the uprising of Lee In-jwa, a civilian named Jangdam (also known as Supungjeong) from Cheong-an bravely raised a militia to fight against the rebels and met a heroic end.
His loyalty to the king and dedication to protecting the nation led to his posthumous recognition as a meritorious subject, and in 1729, a memorial was first erected in Cheong-yong-ri to honor him.
This memorial was later relocated to its current site in Jocheon-ri, preserving its historical significance to this day.
As you approach, the Chungshingak stands as a modest structure with a gabled roof, yet its historical aura is anything but small. It is surrounded by a fence that protects the internal cultural heritage, with a clear plaque displayed prominently at the front.
The red lattice windows and pointed decorations not only prevent unauthorized access but also enhance the architectural beauty of the old building.
Several plaques bearing the traces of time, adorned with vibrant and vivid decorative patterns, catch the eye. They are inscribed with Jangdam's loyalty, achievements, and official titles, allowing visitors to witness the history of Confucian virtues and loyalty firsthand.
While Goeasan Jangdam Chungshingak may not be a grand or flashy tourist attraction, it is an excellent place to quietly walk and remember the righteous figures of our history, appreciating the elegance of Joseon-era memorial architecture.
It offers a serene retreat, harmonizing with the peaceful rural landscape.
If you are planning a trip to Goeasan or passing near Cheong-an-myeon, I highly recommend stopping by the 'Goeasan Jangdam Chungshingak,' where the spirit of ancestors who dedicated their lives for the country lingers, for a meaningful experience.
