Exploring the Ancient Ginkgo Tree and Cheong-an Elementary School in Goesan
I recently visited the 'Ginkgo Tree in Goesan Eumnaeri (Natural Monument No. 165)' located in Cheong-an-myeon, Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong Province.
Before entering the main gate of Cheong-an Elementary School, I was pleased to find signs along the roadside guiding me to the location easily.
Location: 8, Cheong-an Eumnae-ro 3-gil, Cheong-an-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do (inside Cheong-an Elementary School)
As soon as I passed through the main gate of Cheong-an Elementary School and stepped into the playground, I was struck by the majestic presence of the enormous ginkgo tree standing in the center of the yard.
According to the informational plaque, this ginkgo tree is estimated to be about 1,000 years old, standing 16.4 meters tall with a circumference of 7.35 meters at chest height.
There is a legend that during the Goryeo Dynasty, King Seongjong held a feast for the people and dug a pond called Cheongdang, planting one of the trees that still stands today. Additionally, a fascinating tale tells of a snake with ears living inside the tree, punishing those who try to harm it.
The trunk of the ginkgo tree, viewed up close, retained the resilience and rough texture shaped by the passage of time, while its branches spread evenly in all directions, creating a wide and comforting shade.
The grand wooden structure and sturdy supports holding the tree conveyed the dedication of those who have cherished this ancient tree over the years.
During my visit, I noticed ginkgo nuts falling to the ground, a clear sign that autumn had arrived.
Next to the ginkgo tree, a colorful playground for children and charmingly decorated elementary school classrooms created a warm and inviting atmosphere.
A statue representing the bond between teacher and student, along with a statue of a child reading a book, was neatly placed, evoking nostalgic memories of school days.
The sight of the ancient tree standing alongside the grassy areas where children once played was both unique and soothing.
The Ginkgo Tree in Goesan Eumnaeri is not just an old tree; it is a living heritage that embodies the long history of Cheong-an-myeon and countless stories, along with the innocent daily lives of children.
I highly recommend anyone looking to escape their busy routine and experience a millennium of history to visit this beautiful site.
