Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
The Harmony of History and Relaxation at Cheong-an Dongheon
On a weekend when the cool autumn breeze was blowing, I headed to Goesan to enjoy a peaceful escape from daily life.
The destination was Cheong-an Dongheon, designated as a cultural heritage site in North Chungcheong Province.
I was excited to experience the elegant charm of a local government building from the Joseon Dynasty and the breath of ancient scholars.
Upon arriving at Cheong-an Dongheon, the first thing that caught my eye was the 'Cheong-an Manse Movement Monument' engraved on a large rock.
This place tells us that it was not merely an old building but also the site of the fervent Manse Movement during the Japanese colonial period.
As I walked past the monument, the elegant entrance of Cheong-an Dongheon welcomed me.
The three-bay gate at the front, made of aged wood and clay walls, showcased a serene beauty that reflected the passage of time.
Next to the gate was a low stone wall, reminiscent of an old rural landscape.
Entering the gate, I found the main building of Cheong-an Dongheon standing majestically across a spacious courtyard.
With six bays in the front and three on the side, it displayed the typical features of a government building from the Joseon Dynasty.
The roof was supported by round pillars, showcasing the simplicity and strength of traditional architecture.
Inside, I admired the ceiling structure where rafters and beams were visible, marveling at the remarkable construction skills of our ancestors who used no nails.
Sitting on the wooden floor for a moment, I imagined the governors of old overseeing the lives of the people and managing affairs here.
Next to the entrance of the Dongheon, various stones stood in a row.
These stones, worn by the elements over the years, were erected to honor the merits of past governors who served in this region.
Each stone seems to testify to the history of Cheong-an.
However, the true charm of Cheong-an Dongheon might be the enormous zelkova trees that gently embrace these old buildings.
The majestic zelkova trees, believed to be hundreds of years old, reached skyward.
Their dense green leaves cast a cool shade over the courtyard, and their twisted branches exuded a strong vitality.
In front of the Dongheon, there is a sign for the 'Wishing Zelkova Tree.'
According to legend, scholars who wished under this tree before exams would succeed.
Even today, those preparing for important tests visit to make wishes.
It is also known as a romantic spot where couples confirm their love under a heart-shaped branch.
Throughout my visit to Cheong-an Dongheon, the fresh air, ancient buildings, and the grand zelkova trees created a peaceful atmosphere.
If you travel to Goesan, I recommend taking a moment to visit Cheong-an Dongheon and experience the elegance of ancient scholars and the generosity of the zelkova trees.
