Kim Yeoseong's Filial Piety Hall: A Historical Cultural Heritage Honoring Filial Piety Towards Parents
In Goesan, Chungbuk, there is a cultural heritage site that tells the story of an individual who left a legacy of deep filial piety towards their parents. This site is Kim Yeoseong's Filial Piety Hall, located in Songpyeong-ri, Mungwang-myeon, Goesan County.
It was established to honor Kim Yeoseong's filial piety during the Joseon Dynasty, allowing visitors to explore the values of filial duty that were highly regarded at the time, as well as the local history.
Kim Yeoseong, a member of the Sangsan Kim clan, was known by the pen name Songam and held a position as a minor official. He is said to have devotedly cared for his parents alongside his brother, Kim Yeosin.
Despite their modest means, they prepared their parents' favorite foods with utmost sincerity and cared for them diligently during their illnesses.
After his mother passed away, Kim Yeoseong built a hut by her grave and lived there for three years, honoring her memory. After his father's death, he continued to guard the grave for another three years, demonstrating his respect.
The actions of these brothers, practicing filial piety both during their parents' lives and after their passing, were considered exemplary in society at the time.
In recognition of their filial piety, a memorial was established in 1533 to honor the two brothers.
Kim Yeoseong's Filial Piety Hall is a structure built to pass down this legacy of filial piety to future generations. The building is modest, featuring a traditional wooden structure with a gabled roof, consisting of one room on the front and one on the side.
Rather than elaborate decorations, its neat form stands out, allowing visitors to observe the architectural style of memorial buildings from the Joseon era.
Inside the hall, there is an inscription honoring Kim Yeoseong's filial piety. Records of his official positions and lineage confirm his identity, and writings by his descendants provide insights into his life and deeds.
Memorials like this one signify the recognition of exemplary figures such as loyal subjects, filial sons, and virtuous women by society or the state. Kim Yeoseong's Filial Piety Hall not only commemorates individual filial duty but also serves as a historical document reflecting the Confucian ethics and family responsibilities valued by society at that time.
It is said that the original memorial was moved to its current location in Songpyeong-ri, Mungwang-myeon, Goesan County, by the Sangsan Kim clan in 1948.
Today, the Filial Piety Hall remains a cultural heritage site that connects the history of the region and the traditions of the clan.
While it may not be grand or adorned with lavish sights, understanding the background of its construction and the story of the individual allows for a deeper appreciation of the meaning contained within this small structure.
It invites reflection on the values of the past that emphasized devotion to parents and the intentions of later generations to remember filial piety.
If you plan to explore the historical and cultural heritage of Goesan, consider visiting Kim Yeoseong's Filial Piety Hall. Through this humble hall remaining in the village, you can observe both the practice of filial piety during the Joseon era and traces of traditional architecture.
