Exploring Hwanghaedo Traditional Handmade Dumpling Soup in Gongju

▲ Hwanghaedo Traditional Handmade Dumpling Soup is a top restaurant in Gongju.
On April 29, 2026, the first meeting of honorary reporters from the Gongju region of the Chungnam Multicultural Newspaper was held, and I had the opportunity to join their lunch.
The dining location was 'Hwanghaedo Traditional Handmade Dumpling Soup,' designated as one of the top restaurants in Gongju.
Located directly across from the main gate of National Gongju University’s Okryong Campus, it was expected that the honorary reporters, who often gather at the Gongju Family Center nearby, would have visited this restaurant frequently. However, it was surprising to learn that all attendees were visiting for the first time, making me curious about their feedback.

This restaurant specializes in making dumplings in the Hwanghaedo style, as indicated by its name. It has consistently been selected as a top restaurant and is the first in the region to be inducted into the 'Hall of Fame.'
The restaurant is a 'NO MSG' establishment that actively participates in the 'Sodium Reduction Movement' for the health of its customers.

The restaurant has 68 seats and offers a menu featuring dumpling hot pot, dumpling set meals, and fried dumplings. The dumplings are made using the traditional method of the founder, Mrs. Hwang Jeong-sook, who learned to make them in her hometown of Ongjin-gun, Hwanghae-do.

Five side dishes were served at our designated table, showcasing care and attention with items like beet-colored water kimchi and aged chili pepper pickles. The garlic scape salad, which indicates the season, was so popular that it was frequently refilled.
As we waited for our dumpling hot pot to cook, the conversation turned to dumplings from various countries. A member from Vietnam noted how many Korean restaurants use Chinese kimchi nowadays, but here, they make their own.

As the discussion about dumplings heated up, the owner advised us to eat the knife-cut noodles first, as they cook faster. The handmade noodles, created by rolling out the dough, have a delightful chewy texture.
As we finished our meal, the owner shared that they would be introducing blueberry cold noodles after participating in the 65th Seongung Yi Sun-sin Festival in Asan. If you're looking for a delicious cold noodle dish, consider visiting Hwanghaedo Traditional Handmade Dumpling Soup after mid-May.
