In Ham-an, Gyeongsangnam-do, there is a place where traditional hanok stone walls harmonize with vibrant red crepe myrtles, creating a romantic summer landscape. This is Musan Temple, a site steeped in the scholarly spirit of the Joseon Dynasty. It is also a famous spot for red crepe myrtle blossoms, blooming under the hot summer sun. For those seeking a peaceful summer getaway, I would like to introduce Musan Temple as a serene healing destination.
Musan Temple holds deep historical value. It is a shrine dedicated to the portrait and relics of Shin Je-joo Se-bung (1495-1544), a distinguished scholar and civil servant of the mid-Joseon period.
Shin Se-bung is well-known for establishing the first Seowon (Confucian academy) in Korea, Baegundong Seowon (later known as Sosu Seowon), during his tenure as the governor of Bonggi-gun, laying the foundation for the Seowon movement in Joseon.
Later, in the 24th year of King Sukjong's reign (1698), his descendants built Musan Temple to honor him. The temple grounds feature the Musan Seodang, where scholars of old practiced their studies, the Gwangpunggak where the portrait is enshrined, and Jangpangak, which houses various historical artifacts, allowing visitors to appreciate the solemn beauty of Seowon architecture.
Musan Temple is a summer destination in Ham-an that offers tranquility away from crowded resorts. I visited on July 21 in the late afternoon and captured the beautiful tiled roofs and red crepe myrtle flowers in photographs.
When I visited, the blooming rate of the crepe myrtle flowers was around 60%. They are expected to fully bloom by the end of July and will display their beauty for about 100 days. I hope you visit in August to capture some lovely photos.
The most popular photo spots are the stone stairs leading up to the shrine area and the Je-wolmun photo zone. These locations have a dramatic and vintage atmosphere, perfect for capturing memorable moments.
On either side of the top of the stairs, two large crepe myrtle trees spread their branches wide, creating a beautiful pink flower tunnel. The contrast between the blue summer sky and the bright flower petals makes for stunning photographs.
Another recommended photo spot is the crepe myrtle flowers harmonizing with the stone walls inside Je-wolmun. Capture the afternoon sunlight reflecting off the stone walls and crepe myrtle leaves. Framing your photos with traditional doors is also a great idea.
The best times to visit Musan Temple are early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sunlight is soft. Photos taken during these times will have a more emotional and warm feel.
Do you need a leisurely break this summer? Sit on the old Seodang's porch, feeling the cool breeze and the sound of cicadas, and walk along the tranquil stone-walled path lined with vibrant crepe myrtle flowers. I highly recommend spending unforgettable healing moments and quiet time at Musan Temple, where the depth of history meets the romance of a calm summer.
