Discovering the Cool Escape: Cheongdo Wine Tunnel

As the hot summer arrives, many people are looking for cool places!
Let me introduce you to an indoor travel destination in Cheongdo, Gyeongbuk, where you can enjoy a refreshing experience all year round!
The Cheongdo Wine Tunnel is a reinterpretation of a railway tunnel that has over 100 years of history.
It has established itself as a unique cultural space and tourist attraction.
This tunnel, known as the Namseonghyeon Railway Tunnel, began construction in 1898 and was completed in 1904.
It was actually a place where steam locomotives used to pass through.
However, in the late 1930s, with the opening of new tracks, it was abandoned until 2006 when it was reborn as a cultural space.
Now, it serves as a storage facility for the world's first persimmon wine, made from Cheongdo's specialty, dried persimmons. ✨
The tunnel is approximately 1 km long and about 5 meters high.
Despite the passage of over a century, it remains remarkably stable due to its solid construction.
If you look closely at the ceiling, you can find traces of the steam locomotives that once passed through, with dark soot marks to spot.
The reason Cheongdo Wine Tunnel is renowned for wine aging is due to its consistent temperature of 13 to 15 degrees Celsius and humidity levels of 60 to 70% throughout the year.
This stable environment allows the wine to mature without being affected by external temperature changes, enhancing its flavor and aroma.
Even if you visit in summer, it can feel slightly cool after going through the tunnel, so it's advisable to bring a light jacket.
The tunnel is darkened, creating a mysterious atmosphere, with various themed exhibitions in different areas.
Rows of persimmon wine bottles and huge oak barrels create an exotic landscape.
With sparkling lights and colorful props scattered throughout, it's a perfect spot for photos.
Here, you can purchase and taste persimmon wine made from Cheongdo persimmons, along with simple snacks like cheese and cake, making it a great place to visit with family or a loved one.
At the deepest part of the Wine Tunnel, there is a space filled with wish papers.
Inspired by the many bats that inhabited the tunnel during its development, a golden bat sculpture hangs from the ceiling, adorned with visitors' wishes.
The sheer volume of wishes shows just how many tourists have visited!
Cheongdo Wine Tunnel is a romantic spot throughout all four seasons.
We hope you can soothe your tired body and mind from the heat of everyday life.
