Discover the Seongsan Fortress Sky Path, a special route where you can experience the beautiful history and nature of Hamann. This sky path is located along the summit of Seongsan, which stands at 139 meters above sea level. It offers a fantastic trail that provides a refreshing view of the Hamann fields and is steeped in local stories.
The Seongsan Fortress Sky Path is one of the beautiful historical trails among the 11 paths in Hamann, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
To reach this location, head to Mujinjeong in Hamann, where you can park at the public parking lot and follow the signs up to the path. Please note that there are currently landscape maintenance works ongoing at Seongsan Fortress.
After parking, a 15-minute walk will lead you to the Sky Path. The total length of the Seongsan Fortress trail is 2.5 km, which takes about an hour to walk at a relaxed pace.
One of the most impressive spots along the Sky Path is a large tree that opens up to a breathtaking view. This area offers the best view of the Malisan Tombs from the northern wall of Seongsan Fortress.
The sight of the golden rice fields in autumn, the Hamann cityscape, and the expansive blue sky was truly beautiful.
During my visit, the silver grass was blooming with a reddish hue, signaling the onset of autumn. It is expected to deepen into more vibrant autumn colors. I highly recommend visiting this serene natural trail this fall for those who wish to enjoy nature in its purest form.
The Seongsan Fortress Sky Path is also rich in history. Designated as Historic Site No. 67, the fortress is a stone structure with a perimeter of 1.4 km, built shortly after the merger of Arakaya with Silla. Evidence of a planned city from the Silla period has been found at the site of Hamann Station, and although the upper part has collapsed, remnants of the walls remain, showcasing the grandeur of ancient fortifications.
Additionally, Seongsan Fortress is famous as the origin of the 'Ararong Lotus.' Excavations in 2009 revealed that the lotus seeds date back to 779 and 669 years ago, confirming their existence from the Goryeo Dynasty, 700 years ago.
These seeds are preserved at the Hamann Museum, and the bright red petals match the depictions in Buddhist paintings from the Arakaya era, which is quite fascinating.
This area is a treasure trove of ancient artifacts. During the excavation of Seongsan Fortress, many relics from the Silla period, including wooden products, fruit seeds, and shards of pottery, were discovered.
In particular, over 300 wooden tablets were unearthed from the inner part of the east gate, which are invaluable resources that could shed new light on Silla's history and our ancient history.
Walking the Seongsan Fortress Sky Path made me feel that this is a must-walk trail for anyone visiting Hamann!
Enjoy the hidden stories and beautiful natural scenery of Hamann at the Seongsan Fortress Sky Path! Why not take a peaceful walk along this historical path with your loved ones and feel the deep breath of Hamann?
