As the leaves turn vibrant colors in autumn, it's the perfect time to step outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. This fall, why not visit a place where you can appreciate art along the forests and valleys, and enjoy fantastic media art created with light at night? Welcome to the 8th Anyang Public Art Project (APAP8) in Anyang, Gyeonggi-do, which runs until November 29. All exhibitions are free to the public.

Returning after three years, APAP8 brings art to Anyang.
Since its inception in 2005, the Anyang Public Art Project has transformed urban spaces and nature into art galleries, allowing citizens to encounter art in their daily lives. This year, APAP8 features 41 artists (or teams) from four countries, showcasing media art, sculpture, and installation works at locations such as Anyang Art Park, Anyang Pavilion, Ogam Gallery, and the Open School at Hakwoon Park.

The theme of APAP8 is 'Arte X: Artistic Transformation - Anyang's Utopia,' symbolizing a moment to refresh the mind by stepping away from a busy routine, suggesting that anywhere can be a utopia.

During the day, visitors can enjoy outdoor sculptures along the forest trails, while the indoor exhibition 'I Pavilion' at Anyang Pavilion features media art and installations. A special exhibition, 'The Utopia We Dream Of,' featuring works from Korea and China, is also held at the Ogam Gallery and Open School at the entrance of Anyang Art Park.

The outdoor project 'Night Utopia' at APAP8 transforms the plaza in front of Anyang Pavilion and the waterfall plaza into a new landscape with light, video, and sound.

Using the stone wall of the artificial waterfall as a screen, videos depicting landscapes and waves unfold, enhanced by laser lights. Various colors of light blend through thin mist, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that makes you feel as if you’ve stepped away from reality.
Discovering public art on a night tour.
In addition to nighttime media art, visitors can appreciate public art installations scattered throughout the park. To delve deeper into the meanings and stories behind the artworks, we joined a night tour with a professional docent.

The artworks encountered at night presented a different ambiance compared to the day. The contrast between the surrounding darkness and the lights made the forms and colors of the pieces stand out more vividly. Enjoying the artworks' integration with nature during the day and their transformation with light at night is a unique experience.

Listening to the docent's interpretations added an enjoyable layer to understanding the artists' intentions behind the works. For those who wish to appreciate the art more deeply, we highly recommend the APAP8 docent program.
