At the western tip of Ulleungdo, from the Taehahyangmok Observatory,
I experienced the breathtaking views of Daepunggam,
which is recognized as one of South Korea's top 10 hidden gems.
Starting from the monorail ride,
to the scenic forest paths, lighthouse stamps, and coastal views,
I would like to introduce a wonderful course on the western side of Ulleungdo.
Taehahyangmok Monorail
Location: 236 Taehagil, Seomyeon, Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk
Operating Hours: Summer 08:00~19:00 / Winter 08:00~18:00
Last Entry: Summer 17:30 / Winter 16:30
Ticket Prices (per person): Adults 4,000 KRW, Youth/Military 3,000 KRW, Children/Seniors 2,000 KRW
* Operating hours may change, and monorail operations may be suspended due to weather conditions.
Please check the Ulleung-gun website or the Ulleung Alert app for operation status before visiting.
The journey up the monorail offers stunning views even before you arrive.
From Taehahyangmok Observatory,
you can take the Taehahyangmok Tourist Monorail.
With a total length of 304m, the ride takes about 6 minutes.
As you pass through the native cypress trees of Ulleungdo,
you can also enjoy the open sea views on the opposite side.
It's an easy climb, even for parents with children.
Walking along the comfortable forest path,
you will see the sea through the trees,
and you might encounter the unique sight of two different trees intertwined as one.
This 'Yunriji', symbolizing love and harmony,
is a popular photo spot for couples.
The guide's witty explanations will bring smiles to your face.
Before reaching the observatory,
you'll find the Ulleungdo Lighthouse on your right.
Part of the 'Lighthouses with Beautiful Sunrises' stamp tour,
it's a great spot to get a stamp.
The first manned lighthouse in Ulleungdo,
it has now been automated.
Continuing a bit further,
you will arrive at the Hyangmok Observatory.
Standing at the observatory, the steep cliffs rising toward the sea
and the deepening water colors are breathtaking.
You can admire the coastline stretching to the west and north,
and even catch a glimpse of the Elephant Rock in the distance.
In the Daepunggam area,
you can also find the natural monument,
the native cypress forest of Ulleungdo.
Witnessing the cypress trees thriving against the fierce sea winds
allows you to feel the resilience of Ulleungdo's nature.
In conclusion,
I rode the monorail, enjoyed the cypress forest and sea,
passed through the Yunriji, and met the Ulleungdo Lighthouse.
After a little more walking, standing at the Hyangmok Observatory,
the views of Daepunggam and the coastline stretching to the west and north,
including the distant Elephant Rock, were captivating.
This western course was filled with scenic views, enjoyable walking, stamps,
and fascinating historical stories.
If you're planning a trip to western Ulleungdo,
make sure to include Taehahyangmok Observatory in your itinerary.
Nearby attractions include:
The Coastal Walking Path and the Lobster Cave
You can walk along the coastal path to enjoy the views of Daepunggam.
The Lobster Cave is a popular snorkeling spot,
not just in summer but also now.
However, access may be restricted depending on the weather and sea conditions,
so be sure to check the operation status before visiting.
The Su-to Museum is a great place to learn
about the history of Ulleungdo.
A visit there will enrich your travel experience.
