At sunset, from the moment the sky begins to glow until the city lights flicker on, there is a place where you can witness this transformation in one spot.

This place is Hamwolru, located in Seongan-dong, Jung-gu, Ulsan.

The name translates to 'a pavilion that embraces the moon,' and visiting at night makes it clear why it has such a name!

Hamwolru sits at the foot of Hamwolsan Mountain, at an elevation of 150 meters. It is just a 10-minute drive from the city center, making it an easy visit after work.

Right in front of the entrance, there is a spacious parking lot for Hamwolru Park, which is free of charge and convenient for parking.

Access to the pavilion from the parking lot is limited to pedestrians, but there are facilities nearby to clean off dirt, making it a pleasant walking route.

Starting September 1, yoga sessions will be held at Hamwolru in the mornings, which might be of interest to local residents!

The path from the parking lot to the pavilion is uphill, but it is a lovely walk where you can enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace. The beautiful path and the soft lighting from Hamwolru create a warm atmosphere.

In front of the pavilion, there are spaces to write wishes, benches, and clean restrooms, making it a popular spot for visitors to linger. There is also a spacious lawn for families, and you might spot people walking their pets.

The moon-shaped photo zone is beautiful during the day, but it truly comes alive at night with its lighting, making it a popular date spot for couples.

Visitors must remove their shoes and wear slippers inside the pavilion. Also, please remember that littering, smoking, eating, cooking, and loud noises are prohibited.

Hamwolru is also available for rental, so check the website or scan the QR code on-site for more details.

What sets Hamwolru apart from other night view spots in Ulsan is not just its view. The pavilion features a traditional Korean roof structure with five bays at the front and three at the side, primarily built with domestic pine. The ornate traditional decorations, reminiscent of Gyeongbokgung Palace, allow visitors to enjoy the night view in a charming setting.

The beams are adorned with images of the blue dragon, white tiger, vermilion bird, and black tortoise, symbolizing regional protection and the well-being of residents.

This space was crafted with care by the important intangible cultural asset, Master Choi Gi-young, and the calligraphy for the plaque was done by calligrapher Jeong Ha-geon.

I visited after dark, but I recommend arriving around sunset. You can witness the beautiful transition from sunset to the evening cityscape!

As the sky darkens, the silhouette of the pavilion and the city lights blend together, creating a completely different atmosphere.

From Hamwolru, you can see the Ulsan Bridge, Taehwa River, and the cityscape all at once. The Ulsan Bridge, which is 1,800 meters long, is the third-longest suspension bridge in the world and is particularly beautiful at night when its lights reflect on the sea.

You can also see the lights of Hyundai Motor, Hyundai Heavy Industries, and the petrochemical complex, reminding you that Ulsan is an industrial city. The Lotte Department Store Ferris wheel, known as a landmark of Ulsan, is also visible, helping you gauge your location.

While there are many viewpoints overlooking the city, it is rare to find a place where you can enjoy the charm of a traditional pavilion at the same time. During the end of the year, Hamwolru hosts sunrise events and traditional cultural experience programs, so visiting during the season would be a great idea.

If you want to take a break from your busy life, consider visiting Hamwolru, which is conveniently located in the city. I recommend slowly taking in the city lights beneath the tiled roof of Hamwolru.
