Hello! This is the Ulsan Metropolitan City Blog Reporter Group.
Recently, the scorching heat has vanished, leaving behind clear skies and refreshing breezes that uplift the spirit.
In such delightful times, wouldn’t you want to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life to quietly gaze at the sea, heal your mind, and appreciate art?
If so, we invite you to the small, beautiful rock island of Soldo, nestled at the end of Bangojin Port in Ulsan.
Soldo Island serves as a protective barrier against the strong waves entering Bangojin Port. Historically, it was named Soldo because it was said that the sound of a geomungo (a traditional Korean string instrument) could be heard when the sea breeze and waves hit the rocks.
When viewed from the sea, Soldo resembles an inverted steamer, leading to its alternate name, Sireu Island. The entire island is covered with gnarled stones, giving it yet another nickname, Gomboseom.
The mystical sounds of Soldo, known as Soldo Myeongpa, are one of the twelve scenic views of Bangojin, making it a beloved emotional travel destination for citizens of Ulsan and visitors from all over the country.
The closest public parking lot to Soldo is at Bangojin Port, located at 109 Seongkkeut-gil, Dong-gu, Ulsan. It offers two hours of free parking on weekdays and one hour on weekends and holidays. However, due to its recent expansion, it can fill up quickly on pleasant weekends and holidays.
Parking is also available at the Soldo public parking lot near the entrance to Soldo, which is a recommended option.
Upon arriving at Soldo, the first thing you’ll encounter is the metallic turtle ship, commemorating the historical significance of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This modern design incorporates traditional elements and metal processing techniques, harmoniously blending traditional patterns with robust structural beauty.
However, what truly endears Soldo to many is the variety of marine life in its clean waters. Unique sea creatures like crabs and hermit crabs abound, providing enjoyable experiences for children, teenagers, and adults alike.
Soldo is also a popular fishing spot, attracting many enthusiasts who fish diligently without venturing far into the sea.
I’ve tried fishing a few times, but it always seems challenging—a battle against time and oneself.
One of my top recommendations is Soldo Art, located within Daewangam Park in Dong-gu, Ulsan. It’s conveniently situated at the entrance to Soldo, making it easy to find.
Soldo Art is a complex cultural space where art and culture of Dong-gu converge, showcasing various exhibitions and artworks while supporting local artists.
This modern and sophisticated design offers visitors a unique aesthetic experience they might not expect. Additionally, various cultural programs and workshops allow for close engagement with art.
Visiting Soldo Art should definitely be on your list when you come to Soldo.
The current exhibition is the 2026 Soldo Art Planning Invitation Exhibition titled "Eheyaji: Doo and, Doo and, Give it to Me," featuring artist Choi Hye-won. The exhibition runs from Saturday, September 5, to Sunday, November 1, at the Soldo Art Gallery.
Now, let’s head towards Soldo, passing through Bangojin Port.
As you walk, you’ll be greeted by a striking white lighthouse and a sculpture of a baby whale from the Bangudae Petroglyphs.
After passing the baby whale sculpture, you’ll cross the Soldo Bridge, where you can catch the salty scent of the sea and hear the true sounds of Soldo.
As you step onto Soldo, the first sight is the white lighthouse, built in the late 1950s, which has guided ships in and out of Bangojin Port for many years.
The dazzling white exterior features a mural of a whale, symbolizing Ulsan, swimming dynamically. The perfect color harmony with the blue East Sea ensures that you’ll capture stunning photos from any angle.
On Soldo, the unique textured rocks covering the island capture your attention. The nickname Gomboseom comes from the numerous pockmarked rocks, which produce clear and beautiful sounds reminiscent of a geomungo when the wind hits them.
Close your eyes and listen to the Soldo Myeongpa; it’s like an orchestra playing nature’s music, bringing deep tranquility to your heart.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed, want to capture beautiful moments with someone, or simply wish to listen to the sound of the waves, consider visiting Soldo before this autumn passes!
