Exploring the Past: A Journey Through the Bibongri Shell Mound Exhibition

The Bibongri Shell Mound Exhibition, titled 'Bringing Time from the Ground,' is currently being held in Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do.
As the daytime temperature hovers around 30 degrees Celsius, we find ourselves in the early summer season, where the sunlight becomes more intense. This time of year, with the refreshing breeze brushing through the fields, often makes me want to walk along the traces of ancient times. Today, I would like to introduce a special exhibition, 'Bibongri Shell Mound: Bringing Time from the Ground,' held at the Bibongri Shell Mound Exhibition Hall located in Bugok-myeon, Changnyeong County.
Soil is a fascinating entity. It silently holds everything—someone's life and memories, the traces of time that have endured wind and rain. The layers of time accumulate to become history, and one day, they may re-emerge into the world through the hands of an archaeologist.
This special exhibition showcases that very moment. Upon entering the exhibition hall, visitors do not merely gaze at artifacts; they encounter the breath of those who lived on this land thousands of years ago. As the exhibition title suggests, the time buried beneath the ground is carefully brought forth and unfolds before us.
The Bibongri Shell Mound is regarded as a significant archaeological site for studying Korea's Neolithic period. It is a rare wetland shell mound found in the inland region, showcasing the daily lives of people through the remnants and various artifacts they left behind. It is designated as a national cultural heritage site, recognized for its academic value and historical significance.
This exhibition features over 40 photographs from the excavation site, actual excavation equipment, and the records and stories of archaeologists. There is also a hands-on experience space where visitors, especially families with children, can engage and have a unique experience.
As you leisurely explore the exhibition, you naturally come to understand the process from the moment artifacts are discovered, through preservation and research, until their historical value is revealed. A small shell buried in the soil tells us about the dietary habits of people at that time, and an ancient tool becomes evidence of daily life in the prehistoric era, allowing us to appreciate the depth of time.
What stands out the most is the focus on authentic records rather than flashy presentations. The vivid images of the excavation site and the efforts of those dedicated to research over the years illustrate that history is not just a simple past, but a story that continues through people today. During the exhibition, I felt a special emotion as if I were participating in the excavation of ancient times.
We often remember history only in terms of grand events and great figures. However, history also exists in the everyday lives of ordinary people. The shells once served at someone's table, small tools used in daily life, and the traces of life left in a handful of soil remind us that history is alive and breathing.
If you wish to embark on a special historical journey with your family on a day in early summer, I highly recommend visiting the Bibongri Shell Mound Exhibition Hall in Changnyeong. As you leave the exhibition, the lingering scent of ancient soil will remain in your heart for a long time.
