SeMA Seoul Mediacity Biennale: Pre-Program 'Poran'

SeMA Seoul Mediacity Biennale
Pre-Program 'Poran' of the 14th Seoul Mediacity Biennale
Introduction to the Works
Work Introduction — ❶ ❷ ❸ ❺ Woo Jung-soo, The Lowers XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, 2026
Woo Jung-soo's paintings reconstruct images and narratives collected from various eras and media, including illustrations from medieval European publications, symbolic motifs from Western art history, and characters from novels and comics. This work serves as a potential framework that converges the meanings and sensations generated and scattered through the exhibition into each scene of the painting. In particular, the four literary texts recited in the exhibition space significantly expand the interpretability of this work.

❶ ❷ Hwang Soo-yeon, Black Effecter, 2023
Hwang Soo-yeon personifies primarily unsettling or fragile subjects, endowing them with a character that reflects the internal conflicts and psychological states of objects that must endure a large and solid appearance, contrasting with their material fragility as 'paper pieces.' Black Effecter, part of the Seoul Museum of Art collection, embodies contemporary sculptural thought and resonates with numerous questions posed by the Biennale regarding the conditions of relationships, the (im)possibility of communication, and the practice of resistance, thus expanding the horizons of new creation.

❶ ❷ ❸ ❹ Jeon Joon, The Conditions of Poetry, 2014
The Conditions of Poetry questions the relationship between the artist and the work through the combination and arrangement of objects. Just as a poet weaves poetry through metaphorical expressions and refined word arrangements, the artist constructs their world through the relationships of objects. This work, stemming from the artist's desire for their work to resemble poetry, draws attention to the metaphorical and implicit qualities of art, rethinking visual art in relation to poetry as a literary form.
