It is advisable to visit the restroom before exploring Yeodamgo.
Upon entering, you will find murals depicting children as archaeologists digging for artifacts. On the day of my visit, a group of preschoolers was actively participating in a hands-on experience.
The old Sinri Tunnel, built in 1931, now serves as a home for artifacts. After ceasing operations as a railway tunnel in 1999, it was repurposed as the 'Majungmul Gallery' for local artists in 2015. Following a closure in 2021, it reopened in 2023 as Yeodamgo, transforming from a transportation hub into a sanctuary for unearthed treasures.
Yeodamgo is dedicated to the preservation and management of excavated artifacts, which are utilized for research, exhibitions, and educational purposes. This visit allowed me to understand where and how artifacts are stored after excavation.
The permanent exhibition titled "Comfortable Place: Home for Excavated Artifacts" signifies the resting place of these treasures. After watching the video "Time Uncovered from the Earth," visitors can dress as archaeologists and search for artifacts in the sand.
Children enthusiastically dug through the sand, discovering hidden artifacts. Initially, I wondered if this activity would be too challenging for young children, but their natural curiosity turned it into a playful learning experience.
They explored patterns on artifacts such as comb patterns, wave patterns, and floral designs, demonstrating a serious interest akin to real archaeologists.
A thought-provoking question arose during the exhibition: "What will become artifacts in 1,000 years?" It prompted discussions with children about which of today’s objects might be discovered as artifacts in the future.
Yeodamgo is part of a national network, with locations in Jeonju, Daejeon, Mokpo, and Gimhae, and plans for expansion into the metropolitan area and Gangwon Province.
Guided tours of the storage facilities are available, offering insights into the preservation process. Tours are conducted from Tuesday to Sunday at 11 AM and 3 PM, limited to 20 participants per session.
On Saturdays, a special 'Storage Facility Open Day' allows access through both the main and back entrances, which connects to Jeonjucheon Stream. Visitors can enjoy a walk or bike ride along the stream before visiting Yeodamgo, providing a unique experience of exploring a historic railway tunnel while engaging with archaeological finds.
If you're looking for a distinctive historical and cultural experience with your child in Jeonju, consider visiting Yeodamgo. After your visit, you might also enjoy a media art exhibition at the nearby Wansan Bunker: The Space.
