Exploring the Hidden Gems of Sunyudo and Jangjado, Gunsan

Every step reveals stunning scenery
Sunyudo and Jangjado in Gunsan
I recently visited 'Gogunsan Archipelago Sunyudo', a representative attraction of Jeonbuk Gunsan, known for its captivating blue sea.
Although the day was quite warm, walking along the gentle coastline while gazing at the transparent sea meeting the blue sky was refreshing for the soul.
This experience truly made me understand why Gogunsan Archipelago is famous for its walkable islands. Today, I will introduce a walking tour course starting from Jangjado Village, crossing the beautiful pedestrian bridge over the sea, and fully enjoying the scenic Myeongsasimni Beach along with thrilling activities.
Starting Point & Transportation Information for Walking Travelers
Sunyudo and Jangjado shine when explored on foot. The public transportation access is excellent, making it ideal for light walking trips.
▶ Public Transport (Bus): Take bus number 99 from Gunsan University Entrance (approximately 1-hour intervals, about 50 minutes travel time)
▶ Recommended Parking Areas
1) Sunyudo Health Center Public Parking: Close to restaurants and the beach.
2) Sunyubong Parking: Located at the island's entrance, it's perfect for starting your walk around Sunyudaegyo Bridge.
If you wish to cover more distance during your walking adventure, you can rent a regular bike (5,000 KRW for an hour) or an electric bike near the health center.
As soon as I entered Jangjado, the sweet and nutty aroma caught my attention. This place is already famous among travelers as 'Hotteok Alley', with prices ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 KRW.
The delicacy I chose was 'Gamtai Hotteok', topped with a slightly bitter seaweed that had a strong ocean flavor. Taking a bite revealed a crispy exterior and a moist interior, filling my mouth with a delightful sweet-salty taste. After recharging with this pleasant sweetness, my steps toward Sunyudo felt lighter.
The Thrill of Walking Above the Sea, Jangjagyo Skywalk
- Location: 1-1 Jangjado-ri, Okdo-myeon, Gunsan, Jeonbuk (Free entry)
As I walked further past Jangjado Village, I encountered the beautiful Jangjagyo Skywalk, connecting Jangjado and Sunyudo. This pedestrian-only skywalk, remodeled from an existing bridge, stretches about 268 meters. As I strolled along, diverse scenery unfolded beneath my feet.
The sturdy wooden deck, sections with a view of the sea through mesh, and transparent acrylic glass sections provided both fun and thrill.
Standing in the middle of the bridge, feeling the cool sea breeze, I was treated to a picturesque view of the majestic Daechangbong's rocky formations, the orange bridge, and the blue sea. Every spot along this path was a perfect photo opportunity.
Following the sound of crunching sand, Myeongsasimni Beach & Mudflat Experience
Crossing the Jangjagyo Skywalk and walking along the Sunyudo coastline, I was greeted by a vast white sandy beach and vibrant mudflats.
At the entrance, performers were busking, filling the air with sweet melodies that added romance to the journey.
Walking along the fine sandy beach while gazing at Mangjubong, Sunyudo Beach is known for its glass-like fine sand, earning the name 'Myeongsasimni'.
Walking barefoot on the beach, feeling the refreshing sea breeze, offers a perfect healing experience, relieving all the fatigue from my body.
With the exotic silhouette of Mangjubong as a backdrop, this peaceful and beautiful path became one of the highlights of my walking journey on Sunyudo.
Although it wasn't the peak season for swimming, I still saw some people enjoying the beach.
Wrapping Up with a Sky Adventure, Sunyudo Sky Sunline (Zipline)
- Location: 136 Sunyubuk-gil, Okdo-myeon, Gunsan, Jeonbuk
- Fee: 20,000 KRW for adults (18,000 KRW with Naver reservation, must book at least one day in advance)
On the beach path, I found the highlight of my Sunyudo walking tour, the exhilarating Sunyudo Sky Sunline Tower, which would instantly relieve the fatigue of walking.
Walking slowly up to the 11-story observatory at about 45 meters high, I could see a panoramic view of the Myeongsasimni beach and Mangjubong. Wearing the equipment and soaring above the sea would be thrilling, and I could even walk to Sol Island!
As I concluded my journey, the sweet taste of Gamtai Hotteok led me to the exhilarating Jangjagyo Skywalk, and before I knew it, three hours had flown by while walking barefoot on the beautiful sands of Myeongsasimni.
Gunsan Sunyudo is thrilling just by sight, but it truly reveals its hidden beauty and diverse joys when explored at a slow pace.
This weekend, consider leaving behind your busy life for a healthy walking trip to Gunsan Sunyudo, where the clear sea scent and dazzling scenery accompany every step.
