As summer vacation approaches, many are planning their trips to the beach. In Chungnam, there are various beaches with unique charms, from Daecheon Beach with its wide sandy shores and summer festivals to surfing hotspots like Mallipo and the beautiful sunsets at Ggotji Beach.
The opening dates for Chungnam beaches in 2026 have been confirmed. Daecheon, Mallipo, and Chunjangdae Beaches will open first on July 4, followed by the remaining 23 beaches on July 11. In total, 26 designated beaches will open in Chungcheongnam-do, with Taean County adjusting its operational beaches to 21 after the designation of Dal-sanpo Beach was lifted.
Daecheon and Muchangpo Beaches will operate until August 23, while the 21 beaches in Taean will also remain open until the same date. Mallipo will operate for 51 days, while the other Taean beaches will be open for 44 days.
1. Daecheon Beach
Daecheon Beach is a large beach representative of Chungnam. With approximately 3.5 km of wide sandy shore, it offers various accommodations, restaurants, and facilities, making it convenient for first-time visitors to the Chungnam coast. The sand is composed of finely crushed shells, making it soft and less likely to stick to the body. The gentle slope and depth of the water attract many families.
During summer, the globally recognized Boryeong Mud Festival takes place, and there are also experience facilities like zip tracks and sky bikes to enjoy alongside the sea. This beach is perfect for travelers who want to enjoy lively festivals, activities, and delicious food.
2. Muchangpo Beach
Muchangpo Beach is famous for its 'mystical sea road,' which appears when the tide recedes. Around the full and new moon, the sea road reveals itself, allowing visitors to walk along the mudflats and observe marine life. The gentle slope and shallow waters make it a great spot for families with young children. After enjoying water activities, visitors can relax in the shade of trees or appreciate the beautiful red sunset over the sea.
Be sure to check the tide schedule before visiting, as the sea road does not open every day. There is also a photo zone called 'Muchangpo Love Gate' for capturing beautiful moments against the ocean backdrop.
3. Mallipo Beach
Mallipo Beach features a wide sandy shore stretching about 3 km and offers stunning ocean views. Its fine sand and gentle slope make it ideal for water activities, and it is well-equipped with accommodations and restaurants. The beach is known for its good waves, earning it the nickname 'Mallipornia' among surfers. With surf shops and lessons available, it's a great place for beginners.
In 2026, it will open on July 4, and night openings are scheduled from August 12 to 17, from 7 PM to 9 PM. Night swimming is allowed only in designated areas, so follow on-site guidance.
4. Ggotji Beach
Ggotji Beach attracts many visitors not just for water activities but also for its breathtaking sunsets along the west coast. The beach stretches approximately 3.2 km, with fine white sand and features like Halmi Rock and Harabi Rock, symbols of Ggotji. The view of the red sunset between the two rocks at dusk is particularly stunning, making it a famous sunset spot. After swimming, visitors can take a leisurely stroll through Ggotji Coastal Park while waiting for the sunset.
5. Chunjangdae Beach
Chunjangdae Beach has a gentle slope of about 1.5 degrees, shallow waters, and relatively calm waves, making it a favorite among families with young children. Behind the fine sandy beach, there are pine trees and acacia forests, allowing visitors to enjoy both the sea and the forest. It’s a great spot to escape the heat in the shade during the day and take evening walks while watching the sunset.
6. Waemok Village Beach
Waemok Village is known for its unique geographical features that allow visitors to witness both sunrise and sunset from the same location. From the early morning light to the evening glow, you can experience different ocean views throughout the day. The beach area features sculptures and photo zones, and a water play area for children during the summer. There is also a coastal walking path, making it a pleasant visit even without swimming.
Before and after the official opening period, visitors can enjoy the beach and sandy shores, but it is recommended to engage in swimming and water activities during the opening period when safety personnel and facilities are available.
Chungcheongnam-do plans to deploy 347 safety personnel at the beaches in 2026 and enhance facilities such as safety lighting towers and rescue equipment. Water quality will be regularly tested for E.coli and enterococci before and during the operational period. Always check safety flags and designated swimming areas, and follow the guidance of safety personnel in case of adverse weather or high waves.
As the west coast's scenery and swimming conditions change significantly with the tides, be sure to check tide schedules if planning mudflat experiences or visits to Muchangpo. It’s advisable to return to shore well before the tide comes in.
The beaches in Chungnam will open sequentially starting July 4, 2026. Before heading out, make sure to check the opening dates, local weather, tide schedules, and swimming availability for a safe and enjoyable summer beach trip in Chungnam.
