May brings a refreshing green hue, making it a delightful season for the heart.
The weather was too nice to stay indoors, so I took my kids to the hidden gem of Ulsan, the 'Hwadong Reservoir Park,' which serves as a natural observation learning area.
I parked near the playground and enjoyed a pleasant walk under the warm sun with my children. As we passed through the tunnel leading to the park, we were greeted by colorful decorations.
This tunnel painting project was selected as part of Ulsan's <2023 Community Participation Neighborhood Gardening Project>.
One of the first things to check when visiting a park is parking, right?
Hwadong Reservoir Park has a well-established public parking lot, making it convenient for families to visit without any hassle.
There’s also a dust removal machine available to clean off dirt from shoes after hiking or walking, ensuring a pleasant outing.
If you visit in early April, you can see the cherry blossoms in full bloom, but we arrived a bit late. The large tree at the entrance had already shed all its blossoms.
Hwadong Reservoir Park is a serene retreat where you can enjoy nature amidst the urban landscape. It’s conveniently located near the Hwabong residential area and is beloved for its fresh air from the nearby Muryongsan Mountain.
The fence painting and pinwheel installation projects at the park were also part of the community gardening initiative.
Please note that some sections of the deck walkway in Hwadong Reservoir Park may be closed for maintenance.
The park offers an unexpectedly open and spacious feel, making it hard to believe it's in the city. The calm reservoir is surrounded by the ridges of Muryongsan Mountain, providing a perfect setting for relaxation.
One of the most memorable moments during our visit was encountering tadpoles throughout the park. I used to see them often as a child, but they are rare these days. It felt like I was returning to the innocence of childhood.
At this time of year, I imagine the tadpoles are growing their hind and fore legs. This park is the perfect natural classroom to observe the frog's life cycle that I only read about in books.
However, to protect the park's ecosystem, please refrain from touching or collecting the tadpoles, and enjoy watching them with your eyes only.
The kids gently scooped the tadpoles into a net and released them back into the water.
We spotted three goats that wandered down from somewhere, played around, and then climbed back up the mountain. I had no idea goats could navigate mountains so well!
There’s a hiking trail that takes about 50 minutes, which isn’t too long, so I plan to challenge it with my child next time.
On one side of the park, there’s a flower garden that was also part of the community gardening project. It was beautifully colorful.
We saw a toad that everyone found fascinating while observing from the deck. The deck is also a great spot for a quick snack, but remember to take your trash with you!
Although we missed the cherry blossoms this time, I definitely want to revisit when they bloom next year. I can see why this place is called the hidden cherry blossom spot of Buk-gu.
While I missed the soft pink excitement of this year, I plan to return next spring to capture the true essence of Hwadong Reservoir.
