From Thursday, July 9 to Sunday, September 27, I visited the Ulsan Museum of Art to experience their ongoing exhibition.
This exhibition, in collaboration with the Asia Culture Center Foundation, showcases an interactive experience that connects generations and has garnered significant interest.

This exhibition, merging contemporary art with the popular music genre of trot, surpassed 10,000 visitors within just 40 days of its opening, reflecting strong interest from the local community.
As of August 17, a total of 10,663 visitors attended the 'Fan Letter' exhibition, with 5,961 visiting from July 9 to 31 and 4,702 from August 1 to 17.
The average number of visitors in August increased by 5.2% compared to July.
Notably, 85% of the total visitors, or 9,049 people, were Ulsan citizens, highlighting the local community's engagement.
The number of visitors to 'Fan Letter' accounts for approximately 20% of the total 53,198 visitors recorded at the Ulsan Museum of Art up to June this year.
The exhibition is currently being held in Exhibition Room 2 of the Ulsan Museum of Art.
This exhibition is part of the 'Letter from Enthusiasts' project produced by the Asia Culture Center, which reinterprets Asian popular music through a contemporary art lens, adding cultural context from Ulsan as an industrial city.
Featuring 11 teams of artists, it provides various visual and interactive experiences.
One particularly fascinating piece is by artist Gu Ji-eun, titled 'Industrial Sauna: Island of Illusion.' This work invites visitors to participate in a coin karaoke setup, naturally drawing them into the experience.
Gu's work captures the narratives of industrialization and migration in Ulsan, reconstructing the urban landscape and memories through spatial installations.
The installation reinterprets the imagery of housing complexes from the industrial era and karaoke signs, visually representing the accumulated memories and emotions of migrants in this industrial city.
The participating artists explore how music reflects societal changes through various media, including video, installation, and interactive works, artistically expressing the memories and emotions built up in the city.
The exhibition allows visitors to recall their memories and feelings as they engage with the music, breaking down generational boundaries.
In addition to local artist Gu Ji-eun, 11 teams from both domestic and international backgrounds are showcasing a total of 11 works, including 7 videos and 4 installations.
Based on the rhythms and emotions of Asian popular music, particularly trot, the exhibition reinterprets the daily life and sentiments of the city.
The vibrant visuals and retro aesthetics provide an immersive experience.
Notably, works by international artists expressing the sentiments of trot and highlighting marginalized figures in society are also significant aspects of the exhibition.
The related exhibition allows visitors to experience the history of trot from 1916 to the present and listen to trot music from Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Malaysia.
Additionally, the exhibition includes a section on the history and evolution of trot through the lens of Oasis Records, Korea's longest-running record label established in 1952.
During my visit, the museum hosted a special musical performance titled 'Saturday's Fan Letter' in the outdoor lawn area, blending the exhibition with live music to create a unique emotional experience for visitors.
This initiative was designed to make the museum space more inviting for citizens to share their memories and feelings.
The performance lasted for one hour, featuring the indie band 'SMIN,' who provided a warm and comforting sound.
Without any prior reservations, anyone could enjoy the performance, and it was impressive to see many citizens filling the space early to enjoy this cultural experience.
The high percentage of local visitors reflects the community's empathy and interest in an exhibition that captures Ulsan's history and memories.
