In Seongnam-dong, Ulsan, I visited the Cultural Street, which features the Dongheon, Gyeoksa, and the City Art Museum, along with various galleries, small theaters, cafes, and popular restaurants.
This area, once the center of Ulsan's economic development, has transformed into a cultural hub for local artists, hosting numerous events and festivals every weekend.
I started my exploration at the Clock Tower intersection, a well-known meeting spot before the era of personal mobile phones.
Even though we now have mobile phones to arrange meetings anytime and anywhere, the Clock Tower intersection was the iconic meeting place in Seongnam-dong until the 1990s.
At the top of every hour, you can hear a train whistle as part of a small event.
The Cultural Street of Ulsan is packed with many restaurants and cafes, as well as venues for artistic activities.
The first thing that caught my eye was the variety of eateries and cafes.
Along the 1 km Cultural Street, there are many popular restaurants and charming little cafes. On weekends, many of these spots have long waiting lines due to their popularity.
Notable attractions on Cultural Street include the City Art Museum and the Goh Bok-soo Music Hall.
The Goh Bok-soo Music Hall allows visitors to experience the music of Ulsan's representative singer, Goh Bok-soo, while the City Art Museum is located at the far end of the Cultural Street, making it easy to visit both in one trip.
There are remnants of Seongnam-dong's past as the center of Ulsan, including cafes that once flourished with literature and romance. Historically, many citizens visited Seongnam-dong to seek employment opportunities at the former Ulsan Station.
As the year comes to an end, the Cultural Street has been adorned with lights, creating a festive atmosphere. This is also the venue for Ulsan's representative year-end festival, the Snow Flower Festival.
In Ulsan, where snow is rare, the Snow Flower Festival in Seongnam-dong offers a chance to experience snow indirectly, and I am looking forward to this year's event.
The area around Ulsan's Cultural Street is filled with galleries, workshops, cafes, and shrines. However, venturing into the alleys reveals beautiful homes and walls transformed into works of art, making the exploration of these alleys enjoyable.
The Cultural Street features various paths, including the Big Story Road, Memory Lane, Seongnam-dong Fashion Street, Youth Street, and Barefoot Youth Road, making each discovery along the way exciting.
In addition to various cultural experiences and dining options, there are also street performances, exhibitions, and festivals. Although I couldn't encounter these activities during my visit, I am excited about the upcoming year-end festivals and street exhibitions.
The Cultural Street of Ulsan seems to resonate more with those from the 80s and 90s, evoking nostalgia, while also serving as a place for younger generations to enjoy retro culture and create new memories.
