The sweltering summer is gradually giving way to typical autumn days.
As we move past the middle of September, we are heading towards the Chuseok holiday and deeper into the fall season.
Why not experience the unique scenery that September has to offer during this Chuseok holiday?
Daewangam Park in Ulsan is a popular destination for both locals and tourists visiting the city.
Since the opening of the Daewangam suspension bridge, the park has attracted even more visitors, allowing them to enjoy a refreshing view of the sea throughout the year.
One of the special sights you can see around this time is the red flower cluster of the 'Cheongcho' (Lycoris radiata), which begins to bloom around mid-September.
At the entrance of Daewangam Park, there is a large dragon sculpture.
This area features the Mir Playground, a great place for children to play. With the weather getting cooler, it's a perfect spot for a family outing.
In autumn, the unique 'Cheongcho' blooms before its leaves appear, creating a stunning view under the pine trees of the park.
On my visit on September 17, I found that the flowers were in full bloom.
On September 11, when I first visited to see the 'Cheongcho', the forest was lush and green.
I wondered if the flowers had bloomed yet, but I noticed they were just starting to emerge from the ground.
From a distance, they were hardly noticeable, but upon closer inspection, I could see the sharp tips breaking through the soil.
When I returned on September 17, the flowers had started to bloom, and I could see red flower clusters and green stems from afar.
If you visit Daewangam Park, crossing the suspension bridge is a must.
In the pine forest near the bridge, you can find 'Cheongcho' along with the now-fading 'Mugunghwa' (Rose of Sharon).
The suspension bridge operates from 9 AM to 6 PM, but it will be closed on Chuseok, September 25, so please plan your visit accordingly.
From the bridge, you can enjoy the expansive sea view, as well as the industrial cityscape of Ulsan.
After exploring Daewangam, I recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the forest while enjoying the blooming 'Cheongcho'.
The 'Cheongcho' has the unique characteristic of blooming before its leaves appear, and it is also used as a medicinal herb.
Although there were still more buds than blooms, I spotted flocks of pigeons foraging among the flowers.
The long flower stems grow about 50 cm tall, splitting at the top to reveal red flowers and stamens.
Some areas had already bloomed beautifully.
These flowers, blooming under the towering pine trees, offer different views at various times of the day.
It was a cloudy day during my visit, creating a serene atmosphere. If you want to see the 'Cheongcho' in sunlight, I recommend timing your visit carefully.
Daewangam Park has a variety of attractions.
In addition to the registered cultural asset, the Ulsan Lighthouse, you can also explore the legend of Daewangam, where the queen of King Munmu of Silla is said to have become a guardian dragon after her death.
The parking lot at Daewangam Park is free for the first two hours on weekdays, and on weekends or holidays, you can receive two hours of parking support if you use the Daewangam shopping area.
