On October 14, under the beautifully shining autumn sky, the Gyeonggi Province Opportunity Reporters gathered for a field trip to discover the origins of healthy food. This autumn fam tour aimed to explore the eco-friendly school meal program in Gyeonggi Province, focusing on the importance and value of sustainable agriculture through farm visits, organic experiences, and safety inspections of agricultural products.
The fam tour was a rare opportunity for the Dream Reporter Group, Youth Reporter Group, College Reporter Group, and General Reporter Group to come together. After meeting at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office, the reporters boarded a bus to their first destination, the Gyeonggi Eco-Friendly Agricultural Products Distribution Center.
The journey from farm to school lunch is not just about preparing food for students. It involves careful management and the combined efforts of many individuals, from cultivation and harvesting to sorting, safety inspections, logistics, and delivery.
According to the on-site explanation, Gyeonggi's eco-friendly school meal program operates based on contract farming with local farmers. The carefully cultivated products undergo inspection, sorting, and pre-processing before being classified and delivered to schools, where nutrition teachers also verify the supplied ingredients.
At the Gyeonggi Eco-Friendly Agricultural Products Distribution Center, the reporters participated in a communication program to learn about the key aspects of the eco-friendly school meal initiative. This program not only provides students with safe and healthy food but also supports local farmers by securing stable markets and increasing their income.
The safety inspection center conducts multiple stages of testing to ensure the safety of agricultural products supplied for school meals. Samples are collected, and pesticide residues are analyzed using specialized equipment. This thorough process highlights the importance of safety verification in the school meal program.
During the tour, the reporters also visited a banana farm in Pyeongtaek, where they learned about sustainable farming practices. They experienced the growth process of bananas and the importance of careful management. The visit emphasized the connection between agriculture, the environment, and the food we consume.
As the tour concluded, the participants reflected on the collective efforts that go into providing healthy meals for students. The experience underscored the significance of supporting eco-friendly agriculture and respecting the hard work of farmers.
