In the second half of 2026, the Hamann Tourist Information Center will host various experience programs in collaboration with local businesses from September to December.
These programs include making mini-book keychains inspired by Hamann's folklore, painting art canvases depicting the scenery of Hamann, and creating frames using the Shrinkles technique to capture the essence of Hamann.
Our family chose the 'Sun-drenched Hamann' experience, where we made cyanotype handkerchiefs and pouches at the Dehamann Cooperative.
Let me share our experience with our 5 and 6-year-old children.

The Hamann Tourist Information Center is the first of its kind in Hamann County, having opened in 2022. It features a unique space reminiscent of an indoor swimming pool, designed around the fun concept of 'Beware of Falling for Hamann's Charm.' Visitors can find a resting area, photo zones, and a wealth of information about local attractions, dining, accommodations, and transportation.
We also took the time to admire the works created by other instructors. It was a meaningful experience, allowing us to create lasting memories during our family trip to Hamann.
The cyanotype technique might sound unfamiliar. It’s a photographic printing process that uses light-sensitive materials, producing a distinctive deep blue image when exposed to sunlight or ultraviolet light. This method of 'painting with sunlight' was a fascinating experience for the kids.
As we started the experience, we first learned about how cyanotype works. We chose between making a handkerchief or a pouch and began our activity.
Using prepared ink, we painted a base design with a brush. After drying the ink with a hairdryer, we placed various items on the design. Then, we used an ultraviolet lamp to create shadows, which added to the artwork.
We were curious about how the final pieces would turn out.
Here’s the cyanotype handkerchief that my child decorated! Initially, it has a greenish tint, but after washing, the base color lightens, and the decorated areas become more vibrant.
It seemed that the handkerchief turned out prettier than the pouch, with a more appealing blue hue.
Since the final look varies based on the placement of materials, it was enjoyable that there was no single correct answer.
The charm of the cyanotype experience lies in the fact that even with the same materials, the results differ slightly based on arrangement and exposure to sunlight.
On the day we visited, it was raining, so we used an ultraviolet lamp, but we were curious about what colors would emerge when dried in sunlight.
Comparing our finished products, we enjoyed saying, "This one is pretty," and "Look how this shape turned out!"
The Hamann Tourist Information Center creates memories. Previously, I would think of tourist information centers as places to receive maps or brochures. However, the Hamann Tourist Information Center we visited transcends that; it’s a place where you can engage in hands-on experiences and create tangible memories of Hamann.
