When visiting Jeju, you must try grilled or braised hairtail fish, a staple of local cuisine. Freshly caught from the pristine waters, experiencing the taste of this fish right here is essential. Recently, during my trip to the eastern part of the island, I visited a beloved restaurant in Jeju called Sonmatchon, which has been cherished by both locals and tourists for years. My dining experience there was 100% satisfying!
1. The restaurant's name alone evokes a sense of quality: Sonmatchon. I was pleased to find ample parking space upon arrival, even accommodating large tour buses. The dedicated parking area was spacious, making it easy for even novice drivers to park without hassle.
At the restaurant's entrance, I noticed a garden, suggesting that the owner grows their own vegetables. Knowing that the ingredients are freshly harvested adds to the excitement! I couldn't wait to see how delicious the food would be.
✔ Location: 661 Bijarim-ro, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City
✔ Parking: Large parking lot available
✔ Operating Hours: 9 AM - 8:30 PM (Closed on Wednesdays, last orders at 7:30 PM)
2. Spacious interior and thoughtful amenities. The restaurant's interior has a bright and warm ambiance, perfect for a comfortable meal. Hygiene was well-maintained, and the staff provided excellent service, answering questions kindly and meticulously preparing the hairtail fish.
All seating is at tables, with sufficient space between them, allowing guests to enjoy their meals without feeling cramped. High chairs are available, so parents with young children need not worry. This restaurant is a perfect choice for group visits, accommodating large families with ease.
3. Abundant side dishes. We wanted to try both the braised and grilled hairtail, so we ordered both. After placing our order, the side dishes began arriving promptly. Utilizing seasonal ingredients, we were served a healthy spread of six different side dishes, including crunchy garlic stalks, lotus root, seaweed salad, pickled onions, stir-fried fish cakes, and young radish kimchi.
As I sampled the side dishes, I began to assess whether this restaurant truly deserved its reputation. The taste of each dish was exceptional, clean, and not overly stimulating, perfectly complementing the main dishes of braised and grilled hairtail.
4. A guaranteed culinary delight in Jeju. Just as I was admiring the side dishes, the much-anticipated grilled hairtail and braised hairtail with fern appeared. The presentation was stunning, with a massive grilled hairtail taking center stage on a long plate. The braised dish was generously topped with ferns, making it visually appealing and mouth-watering.
5. In summary, Sonmatchon is located about 40 minutes from the airport, close to popular tourist spots like Eco Land and Bijarim. With its spacious parking, restaurant layout, and various amenities, it’s a great dining option for all ages. The restaurant serves only fresh hairtail and uses homegrown vegetables, ensuring a heartfelt meal reminiscent of home cooking. Enjoying delicious food while traveling is one of life's greatest pleasures, and Sonmatchon offers a delightful dining experience that will recharge you for your journey.
