A Hidden Gem in Euljiro: Pungnam Golbaengi
Pungnam Golbaengi, located in Euljiro 3-ga, is a long-standing establishment that has been certified as a 'Baeknyeon Gage' (a century-old store) and has been passed down through three generations.
This place has been featured on Baek Jong-won's 'Three Great Kings,' and it seems to be one of his favorite spots from the past.
When you order a serving of golbaengi (snail), it comes with a side of rolled omelette, oden soup, and peanut snacks as standard.
I visited after 9 PM, and aside from my seat, the place was fully packed. It appears that there is a waiting line starting from 6 PM these days.
In the past, there were both domestic and imported options with different prices, but now it seems they only sell the domestic variety.
The oden soup served as a complimentary item is refillable, making it perfect for cold weather.
The golbaengi arrives automatically without needing to order it. It seems to have a sweeter taste compared to before. The combination of tangy vinegar, green onion, and spicy fish is still delightfully chewy and incredibly delicious. Ever since I started coming to this place, I can hardly look at golbaengi from other pubs.
The rolled omelette is incredibly fluffy and delicious. Dipping it in ketchup makes it even tastier. Plus, they offer unlimited refills on the omelette, which is fantastic!
The peanut snacks are surprisingly addictive and make for the perfect beer snack. I tried it with Suntory beer this time, and it was indeed delicious.
This has been my go-to spot for over 20 years, even before it became a century-old store. It seems to have been passed down from grandmother to father and now to son, yet the taste remains unchanged and has even improved. On this visit, I went alone and didn’t get to try the noodles and spam, but I highly recommend the noodles and spam combo. They use medium noodles, which are chewy and perfect with the broth.
If you get a chance to visit, I strongly recommend trying that combination!
