The Season of Lotus Flowers in Jinchun

The season of lotus flowers has arrived, marking the most vibrant and lush time of the year.
As summer deepens, news of green lotus leaves and blooming lotus flowers spreads across the country.
Today, I visited Okdong Pond, a must-see destination for summer travel in Jinchun.
The name Okdong Pond comes from its location in Okdong-ri, where the pond is situated.
Every summer, over 30,000 square meters of the pond bloom with lotus flowers, showcasing stunning scenery.
When I visited on July 15, I found lotus flowers peeking out here and there, but they were not yet in full bloom.
As they have just started to blossom, I look forward to seeing the pond filled with blooming lotus flowers by the end of July.
As the peak blooming period approaches, the once quiet village begins to bustle with visitors eager to see the magnificent sight of fully bloomed lotus flowers.
What makes the lotus flowers at Okdong Pond so beautiful is that they are not intentionally planted; they grow naturally, making this one of the places with the highest number of lotus flowers in the country.
This is my first time seeing lotus flowers up close.
Among the fully bloomed flowers, I enjoyed spotting the buds that are just about to open.
One of the reasons we can see such beautiful lotus flowers every year is due to the dedicated care of the local residents.
Since the water supply for agriculture in Deoksan-myeon, Jinchun, changed from Okdong Pond to Maengdong Reservoir, the residents have been regularly draining water to keep the lotus flowers thriving in clean water, treating the pond like their own backyard.
There is a path along the dike of Okdong Pond, making it easy to walk around and enjoy the lotus flowers at a leisurely pace or take photos against the backdrop of the blooming flowers.
In Buddhism, the lotus flower symbolizes maintaining purity and nobility amidst a polluted world.
The meaning of the flower aligns beautifully with its appearance.
As it has not been developed as a tourist attraction, Okdong Pond retains the rustic charm of a countryside village, making it a peaceful place to explore.
There are mainly two types of lotus flowers blooming at Okdong Pond: the popular pink lotus (Hongnyeon) and the white lotus (Baeknyeon), which has larger petals and a deeper fragrance, often used for tea.
As the lotus flowers begin to bloom in Jinchun, the scenery of fully blossomed flowers will be beautiful, but the current moment, with buds shyly peeking out, might just be the golden time to witness the freshest and most vibrant lotus flowers.
This summer, I recommend taking a light-hearted trip to Jinchun's Okdong Pond with your loved ones.
The gentle waves of lotus flowers are waiting for you.
