The Beauty of Lotus Flowers at Haddeok Reservoir Park

One more reason to look forward to July! It might just be the news of the lotus flowers blooming at Haddeok Reservoir Park in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do.
The season of shyly blooming lotus flowers among the green leaves has returned.
As the 'Dangjin Haddeok Lotus Festival', the premier summer festival in Dangjin, approaches, many are curious about when to visit to see the most beautiful sea of lotus flowers.
I took an early trip to Haddeok Reservoir Park.
From the current blooming status of the lotus flowers to some helpful tips, I will vividly share my experience.
The view of the park from above resembles a massive 'green carpet', creating a breathtaking spectacle!
Although it is not yet peak blooming season, the red lotus buds are starting to shyly peek out between the leaves.
The park's walking paths are neatly arranged in a grid, making it an ideal spot for strollers or a leisurely walk with family while capturing beautiful photos.
Haddeok Reservoir is an ancient artificial reservoir with a long history. Although the exact construction date is unknown, it is believed to have been built by Gyeon Hwon, the founder of Later Baekje, to secure military provisions and water for horses during the late Unified Silla period.
During the Joseon Dynasty, it was recognized as one of the 'Three Great Reservoirs of Joseon' alongside Byeokgolje in Gimje and Namdaeji in Hwanghae-do.
In 2017, it was designated as a 'World Heritage Site of Irrigation Facilities', known for its unique curved embankments, unlike other straight embankments.
This area has long been filled with lotus flowers, historically referred to as 'Yeonji' or 'Haddeok Yeonji'.
Over the years, as the reservoir's function diminished and most of the area turned into farmland, the city of Dangjin sought to revive the historical reputation of this 'Yeonji' by restoring and creating large lotus flower fields, resulting in the vibrant lotus sea we see today.
What I thought was just a beautiful park turned out to be a historically rich world heritage site dating back to the time of Gyeon Hwon.
The walking paths along Haddeok Reservoir Park are well-maintained. Walking under the lush tree canopy while enjoying the green lotus leaves nearby is the perfect experience.
Currently, the lotus flowers are blooming beautifully in some areas, while others are still developing their buds.
Walking under the shade of the thick trees with a refreshing breeze is truly a healing experience.
Be sure to bring an umbrella or sunglasses. While there are shaded paths, the sun can be quite strong on the deck paths closer to the flowers.
To explore the vast park leisurely, it’s advisable to bring cool water or drinks to stay hydrated.
Lotus flowers bloom most beautifully in the morning rather than in the hot afternoon. If you want to capture the lotus flowers with the fresh morning dew against the blue sky, consider visiting early.
As you walk through Haddeok Reservoir Park, you will encounter charming spots that will make you stop in your tracks.
The green vine tunnel and heart-shaped sculptures make for lovely photo opportunities with loved ones.
Sitting on a bench under a large tree and gazing at the scenery is truly refreshing.
Experience the delightful charm and openness of the lotus fields in July at Haddeok Reservoir Park!
The 9th Dangjin Haddeok Lotus Festival will take place from July 3rd to 5th, 2026, at the Haddeok Folklore Museum and surrounding areas.
This festival will be filled with various programs, including an opening ceremony, a performance by singer Hong Jin-young, a drone light show lighting up the night sky, and a cool water festival, making it a great time to plan a visit to Haddeok Reservoir Park!
