The Beauty of Haddukje and the Upcoming Lotus Festival

Haddukje, a reservoir believed to have been built by Gyeonhwon during the Later Baekje period, is one of the three major reservoirs of the Joseon Dynasty. Today, it is a historical agricultural heritage site designated as a cultural asset of Chungcheongnam-do and recognized as a World Irrigation Heritage.
As summer arrives, lotus flowers have begun to bloom at Haddukje. This weekend, from July 3rd to July 5th, the 9th Hadduk Lotus Festival will take place, and I would like to share my experience visiting Haddukje to see the lotus flowers.
At Haddukje, large clusters of lotus flowers bloom in pink and white, covering the reservoir's surface during the summer.
Interestingly, this beautiful scenery can only be seen for about a month each year, and only for four hours a day. The lotus flowers open in the morning and gradually close as the afternoon approaches, so visitors hoping to see fully bloomed flowers should visit in the morning.
Lotus flowers typically begin to bloom in late June, reaching their peak in mid-July, and can be enjoyed until early August. They are most beautiful in the early morning until around 10 AM, especially when bathed in the warm sunlight.
On the weekend afternoon I visited, the clouds in the sky were stunning. Fluffy white clouds floated like cotton candy in the blue sky, reflecting beautifully on the waters of Haddukje.
If you look closely at the photos, you might spot a family of ducklings. Haddukje is not only a beautiful place for summer lotus flowers but also a winter haven for swans, which migrate to Korea to spend the winter, creating a spectacular sight.
I visited Haddukje around 4 PM when most of the lotus flowers had closed, but I could see many flower stalks rising, hinting at how beautiful the morning would be. I captured images of the lotus flowers against the backdrop of clouds that looked like whipped cream in the blue sky. Although I couldn't photograph the fully bloomed flowers this time, I promised myself to return early this weekend to capture the stunning scenery.
Thanks to well-maintained walking paths and shaded areas, Haddukje is a pleasant spot for a summer stroll. The beauty of the sky made it a day filled with awe.
On one side of Haddukje, an accessible path has been installed to ensure that everyone can move around comfortably. The main routes have been made flat for easy access.
With a gentle breeze blowing, the tranquil afternoon landscape of Haddukje was peaceful, often filled with couples and families enjoying their time together.
This weekend marks the 9th Hadduk Lotus Festival, featuring various performances and experiential activities against the backdrop of Haddukje.
Key events include the opening ceremony with invited singers, a drone light show, an EDM party on the first day, and a water festival, water slides, and cultural performances on the second day.
Additionally, there will be museum experiences focused on lotus flowers, an ecological stamp tour, a trolley train, flea market, and local specialty experiences. It seems like a great opportunity to visit Haddukje and enjoy this grand festival.
This concludes the news about the blooming lotus flowers at Haddukje and the upcoming Hadduk Lotus Festival. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and memorable festival time.
