The 100-Year Story of Shinpyeong Brewery: A Place Where Time Matures

In a place where time matures, the 100-year story of Shinpyeong Brewery unfolds.
Shinpyeong Brewery is not just about drinking alcohol; it is a realization that it is a product of time, people, and life maturing together.
Located in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, the Shinpyeong Brewing Gallery is a museum and artistic space that narrates the 100-year history of Shinpyeong Brewery based on rice, food, and liquor under the theme 'A Brewery Where Time Matures.'
Learning about life in a space where alcohol is brewed.
The brewing gallery is not merely an exhibition space but a place where visitors can walk through the actual process of brewing.
As alcohol matures with time, not rotting but becoming fragrant, the message throughout the space suggests that our lives can also deepen in this way.
Walking quietly, one feels a sense of calm and thinks, 'Ah, I am maturing well too.'
Shinpyeong Brewery: A 100-Year Story Across Four Generations
1st Generation | The Beginning of the Makgeolli Industry
In 1926, founder Kim Soon-sik entered the brewing industry during the tumultuous era of Japanese colonial rule.
In 1932, amidst numerous competitors, his determination as a young man led him to obtain a brewing license, conveying the urgency and courage of that time.
The beginning of Shinpyeong Brewery was rooted in the sincerity of people, not capital.
2nd Generation | Preserving Tradition Over Time
The second generation witnessed both the peak and decline of the makgeolli industry, persevering to preserve traditional brewing techniques.
Master Kim Yong-se, the 79th food master of Korea, created Baekryeon Makgeolli, which can be brewed year-round using steamed lotus leaves.
This was a result of evolving tradition to fit the times.
3rd Generation | Expanding into Culture and Tourism
By the third generation, Shinpyeong Brewery expanded beyond being a place to sell alcohol to a space for experiencing and feeling.
Through brewery tours, tastings, and experiential programs, it impressively transformed makgeolli into a cultural content.
4th Generation | Aiming to Become a Traditional Cultural Content Company
Today, Shinpyeong Brewery dreams of becoming a traditional cultural content company that introduces Korean history and culture to the world through makgeolli.
At its core, the next generation is quietly accumulating time to prepare for the future.
The history of makgeolli flowing with the times.
Following the exhibition, one discovers the connections between the Japanese colonial liquor policies, the Korean War, the ban and revival of rice makgeolli, and the industry's ups and downs.
It was surprising to realize how closely the history of modern Korea is intertwined with that of makgeolli.
Makgeolli has always been by the side of the common people, enduring the fluctuations of the times.
