Experience a refreshing summer at Hwayang Valley in Guisan. The valley stretches 3 kilometers along the Hwayang Stream, showcasing a total of nine scenic spots. Some sections are open for water activities, and picnic zones are available. The adventure begins at the first scenic spot, Gyeongcheon Cliff, where a spacious parking lot is conveniently located, and water play areas are accessible nearby.
While access to the valley is generally restricted as it is part of Sobaeksan National Park, some areas are opened during the summer. Safety booths for water activities are set up around the Sogun River Rest Area, guiding visitors through designated swimming zones. On the day of my visit, intermittent rain kept crowds at bay, making for a peaceful experience.
Hwayang Valley is historically significant as it was once a retreat for the renowned scholar Song Si-yeol during the mid-Joseon period. He named the nine beautiful landscapes of the valley. The Hwayang Confucian Academy remains a testament to his legacy. The National Park's Hwayang Visitor Center is also nearby, with extensive construction taking place in the area. The forest trail starting from Gyeongcheon Cliff offers a wonderful trekking experience, accompanied by the soothing sounds of the stream.
Near the visitor center, a picnic zone is open to everyone, featuring palm mats and picnic tables beneath the lush trees. However, cooking, camping, and pets are not permitted, so adherence to the rules is essential in this shared space.
The distance from Gyeongcheon to the second scenic spot, Unyeongdam, is about 400 meters along a wide forest road, providing natural shade from the trees on one side and a clear stream flowing on the other. Visitors can only access Hwayang Valley by foot after parking at Sogun River Rest Area. Only vehicles of those who have made prior reservations for accommodations or dining are allowed to enter.
As I walked, glimpses of the valley peeked through the trees, opening up to a stunning view after crossing the Hwayang Bridge. Water flowed beneath the dam, and egrets wandered nearby. Each step revealed breathtaking natural scenery, and I found myself marveling at the ever-changing beauty around me.
The narrow stream widened, forming serene pools at Unyeongdam, where the reflection of clouds danced on the water's surface. This area, known for its picturesque views, is a contrast to the majestic Gyeongcheon Cliff, showcasing the valley's vibrant blue waters.
A café and restaurant area has developed around Unyeongdam and Geumsadam, providing dining options for visitors. Local favorites, including bibimbap, are available, along with a charming café atmosphere.
Although not one of the nine scenic spots, Hwayang Academy is also worth a visit. Established posthumously in honor of Song Si-yeol, it served as a gathering place for scholars during the Joseon era. The academy features the shrine dedicated to the Ming Dynasty Emperor who sent aid to Joseon during the Imjin War.
From June to November, Hwayang Academy offers programs for visitors to experience traditional scholar activities and cultural experiences. Various activities, including night walks to observe fireflies and creating personal scholar books, are available.
Continuing from Hwayang Academy, the scenic spots Eungungam and Geumsadam follow, featuring a large grassy area with a valley nearby. The area is named Eungungam due to the legend of Song Si-yeol mourning the death of King Hyojong every morning.
At the end of the grassy area lies Geumsadam, known for its beautiful scenery with a stream flowing vigorously over rocks. The pavilion atop the hillside, built by Song Si-yeol in 1666, served as a place for scholarly pursuits.
The trail continues past Geumsadam, leading to Chamsungdae, Neungundae, Waryongam, Haksodae, and Pagodong, showcasing five breathtaking views along the way. The trek from Geumsadam to Pagodong takes about an hour, perfect for those seeking a refreshing summer getaway.
On the return path near Gyeongcheon Cliff, a designated water play zone is maintained with safety personnel to ensure visitor safety. Parking is available at Sogun River Rest Area for summer activities, continuing through July and August.
